I'd buy a decent used one any day. The problem is, there some luck involved. You have to find the bike AND have the money for it at the same time. I can never seem to find both at the same time.

I was looking in locally owned bike shop at the new bikes $200 -$3500. I was looking really for some break shoe pads for my "Beacon" road bike I bought new in '70. I spotted a muddy mountain bike ( the one I bought ). It sold new for $750. He had checked it over and gave it a good bill of health. He included six month return and servicing; if I did not like it return it. It has lite weight Kevlar tires and magnezium rims. You can hold the entire wheel up with your little finger ( both wheels ).

I've had it 5 years now and :D !!!!

I have four bicycles; My first was a Fuji thrill which is now 15 years old and a great bike. My second is a Micargi mountain bike that was purchased a few years ago it has a full suspension with front and rear disc brakes, nice bike but it weighs a ton. My third bike is my Electra, this bike is a cruiser and is very well made, it is all aluminum and has a three speed Shimano gear set, a nice bike for the campground or cruising around. It is very easy to ride. My fourth bike and possibly my favorite was given to me after my nephew passed away last year, It is a Trek 4500 that is absoultely beautiful, riding this bike is a lot of fun and it is very comfortable for a mountain bike. I am 57 years old and have made several long (20 mi.) uphill climbs with this bike. Check out the Treks you will probably find what you are looking for. If you want a little 50's flair check out the Electra's.
