Ira to Coral Springs--DROP DEAD!!!

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby Miriam C. » Mon Oct 30, 2006 10:34 pm

 Ira it's just not right. My sister told me I can't take my TTT and park it in her yard for Thanksgiving. The whole city of Lawrence Kansas is disallowing anything with wheels to be parked anywhere there is not a driveway. "To keep---and own property" is gone.

David do they have Chineese food bars that sell only Bud?

No, I'm with IRA here.

Neighborhood associations aren't all that and a bag of chips.
"Highly restricted lots" are for full-bloom doofi with more money than sense.
Living in an "upscale neighborhood" is for the birds.
What happens when you (or your car, or your house) get old, and need a little work?

Coral Springs sounds like a sucky town. I'd get out, Ira, posthaste.

Ira I can feel for ya.

A friend of mine moved from the Great Lakes area to Rural Arkansas. Because of such silly "Neighborhood Associations" with their rules and snitches. He lived their for longer than an "Association" was even in existance.

As some of you remember, it's the CITY here--I don't live in a closed community with an association. (And no, they sure wouldn't allow a portable garage.)

Plus, I live on the "poor" block, and I can bet you dollars to doughnuts that the guys with huge houses on 1-acre parcels can do anything they WANT on their grass without a problem.

Here's the great irony:

Don't know if you guys saw this recent news story, yesterday and today, where they came out with safest cities in America. Coral Springs came in at #10, but the thing is, at what price? Also, you gotta look at these surveys with a suspicious eye:

They're usually done by economic development magazines who then sell advertising to these very same "safe" cities in special issues about the survey. I heard that Orlando was one of the WORST in the country.

My city is supposed to be so family-friendly and "safe." Meanwhile, they''re so dang concerned about keeping up appearances that the high school kids here have nothing to do and they cause a LOT of problems. It's a right of passage for kids to hang out on a corner, and if they're not causing any trouble, what's the harm?

No, not in Coral Springs. That's considered loitering.

I can't WAIT for my magazine to hit the streets, and yeah, I'll probably be moving when my older one is out of high school.

That really sucks. On our little piece we have six running vehicles, one torn up vw, a friends trailer, my parents trailer, occasionally a dumptruck, trailers, skid steers, partial teardrops. backhoes ect...

But I know what you mean.. my father in law, 30 miles from here got a ticket for having a weed in his park strip, he bought out in the sticks over 20 yrs ago and is now surrounded by half million dollar homes.

First thing, calm down. Showing the frustration will only entise them to stand where they stand. I've got the same problem in my city. Trailers can not be stored in the driveway. Have to be hidden behind landscape or fence when stored. When stored can't be on grass/ground. Can only be in driveway for 3 hours parked. And some more stupid stuff dealing with time, storing, etc.

Contact the city on the note to find out about the rules and what they define the TD to be. Maybe you can't have it on your driveway, but can on the side of the house. When on the side, you can't have it on the grass, so add blocks under the tires. There are simple little things you can do. You can also go to a city meeting and complain about the rules, introduce a rule change, and petition for it. At the following meetings, see about what the city is doing about it. You could even start a petition yourself and get the rules changed. Gov't is slow to move, but once the giant moves, its hard to stop.

Don't feel too bad. Most of the time, call-ins from neighbors lets the city know of your house, trailer, etc. What I did to satisfy my city's ordnances was build a fense all around my yard (took over 1-1/2 yrs so I know the neighbors loved me for it), built a gate to 'hide' my camper and other trailer, and added 12" landscape blocks for the tires. Every once in a while, when I have a 3-4 day weekend, I pull the camper out and let it sit in the driveway. You should have a window between when you leave your TD in your driveway, when the neighbor calls the city, when the city actually comes out, then takes pics and notes the date. I usually have 4 days. So a 4day weekend works for me.

How much did Coral Springs charge Good Year Tire Co. for "parking" their blimp recently?

The problem is that this is fast becoming an AMERICAN "thing". As city council members attend conferences, these kinds of ideas (ordinances) get transferred from city to city.

I live in north of Dallas and in one day, about 90% of my subdivision recieved warning citations with a stern note that the city would be back by the following week to inspect. We later found out that this happened all over the city. Yes, I got cited because I had just bought the trailer for my tear and had parked it on my nicely mowed grass next to my driveway.

City leaders are being told that they are missing out on a lot of affluent prospective citizens because the people, who live in the city and currently pay property tax and pay their salaries, are not keeping the city in a condition that is appealing to the money bags.

The solution is for citizens to consolidate and to lean heavily on the mayor and the city council at the polls.

The day that they handed out those citations was the best thing to have happen. Citizens stormed the Bastil at the city-wide "community" meeting and sent a tough message. :x The counsil slacked off, but we citizens still need to make sure the citations come off the book though.

I am all for keeping my city looking groomed, but not at the expense of somebody dictating to me when, how, what I can do to the property that I own and pay taxes on.

Just for giggles, I went to the Coral Springs Website and found this restriction:

Commercial and recreational vehicles may not be parked in residential areas between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday to Saturday and all day Sunday. Restricted vehicles include commercial vans and trucks, motorhomes, campers, boats, trailers, utility and off-road vehicles. Exceptions are made for:

Vehicles parked in a garage or carport, providing the carport screens the vehicle from view on three sides utilizing a wall, fence or hedge at least four feet in height
Vehicles owned by a physically handicapped person and marked with an appropriate disabled sticker
Vans or trucks weighing less than 5,000 lbs. with no commercial lettering, used only for private passengers

Seems a little overly restrictive, if you ask me. Are there similar restrictions on passenger vehicles? For instance...Could I drive my rusted out 1989 Ford Taurus wagon? Or would I have to trade it in for rusted out Lexus?

That's where you hit the nail on the head, and why I wrote our new mayor about this when he was elected this past year:

Are you telling me that my TD is a bigger blight to the community than a rusted out 1973 Chevy Nova? That a gorgeous Boston Whaler on a sparkling new trailer is more visually appealing than a brand-new Hummer?

There's no logic to this, and while I appreciate the comments about approaching city government, the city commissioners, in a logical, rational way, you just don't understand how this city works. It is totally ego-based, and if I went before the commission to suggest or set anything concrete in motion to change it, I would be getting tickets every other day for having the grass grown 1/2" too high.

Did you know that we had this dog who killed its owner awhile back, I forget the breed, but supposedly worse than a pitbull when not properly raised , and the city put into motion a bill forbidding ownership of this and OTHER breeds in the city?

What the heck is next--forbidding BLACKS!?

By the way, they spent a lot of time meeting about this, had open public hearings, the City Attorney was with them all the way, for a number of weeks. Until...

Until someone pointed out to them:

"Shmucks. It's against both Florida and County statutes to vote something like this in, so why are you wasting your time?"

Now one would think that the state and county and statutes would mean something, right? That they would look at this and say, "Well, that's the law, so let's abandon this stupid idea."

But no:

They're now petitioning for a variance/exception, because only THEY know what's good for the citizens of Coral Springs. Pure ego.

That's it--I'm running for mayor.
Here we go again!

What they need is some kind of class action suit against the city.

That being the middle class who don't have the money or sayso as to what goes on.
