Building a Teardrop Trailer?
Note:
If you are welding your own trailer frame:
Rich & Doug have created a
Trailer Frame Tutorial
that can be of great help to you.
Note:
Modifying off the self trailer to accommodate the Teardrop design:
Axle position is a consideration as you build a trailer.
You may want to consider modifying the standard utility trailer axle
position back to facilitate door clearance & accommodate tongue weight
distribution for your Teardrop trailer build.
Andrew (angib)
Andrew has a formula for figuring out the distance back your axle should
go to facilitate, tongue weight, fender position and door opening issues.
Andrew explains his rule of thumb for axle placement:
"My simplest rule of thumb is to put the axle between 35% and 40% of
the frame length from the back - and madjack's 36" on a 8ft frame is bang
in the middle at 37.5%!
You can go as far forward as 45% of the frame length, but only if you have
a light galley and intend to fit a heavy tongue box."
Andrews formula to facilitate door clearance & accommodate tongue weight
Where should the axle be put on my trailer?
Click here to see pictures and read how to modify your new trailer by moving the axle back.
Note: Trailers may have to be strengthened if the
axle is relocated to accommodate weight considerations.
Important:
Note:
Jack AKA (Madjack) talks about proper installation of your axle
& especially if you put it on top of the springs:
"IF, you have a perfectly straight axle, you can just flip it over...however
most axles have just the slightest of bows and that bow ABSOLUTELY has
to point upwards...if you flip it over it will point downwards...do not rely on
your eyes alone...take a straight edge and lay it on the axle to see if it has
a bow in it"See the slight bowed axle here, so you know what you are looking for.

above for contextual understanding:

When all is said and done, in planning and trailer finished, Visualize a level trailer as it attaches to your Tow Vehicle (TV).
Note:Think about WEIGHT if you are building a Trailer:
Planning weight issues will save on initial co$t as well as ga$ down the
road. Over building such as using 2x4's instead of smaller framing has
been a regret for many builders here. Ask or read about light weight
construction and you most assuredly will be happier down the road.
Note:Think about shocks for your trailer:
Some put shocks on their trailers to accommodate weight
considerations and take the bounce out. Some say their trailers even track
better while on the road.
Note: Foundation floor construction flow:
As a general rule a builder builds the bottom of the trailer flips it over and
seals the underside of their trailer then flips the bottom back over
andbolts it down to the trailer frame:
Note: Water barrier for the bottom of your trailer:
What will you use to seal the bottom of your trailer?
Note: Check your trailer Owners Manual for bearing and seal maintenance
prior to running your trailer as well as on going considerations of
maintenance time frames. As a rule it is considered wise counsel to check
& or consider repacking wheel bearings before first use.

Harbor Freight trailers come with a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin
2) Red Trailers:Web site RT
Question: How do I register my RedTrailer?
Answer: When you receive your RedTrailer Kit, the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin will be included in a brown envelope, taped inside the section of the box marked "OFFICIAL DOCUMENT ENCLOSED." Registration procedures for kit trailers vary widely, because they are regulated by state and local governments (a few states do not require registration at all), so please be sure to check with your local authorities. Some states require a notarized signature on the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin. If this is the case in your state, simply mail the certificate to RedTrailers.com, Inc., 300 Commerce Blvd., Quakertown, PA 18951. We'll get it notarized and return it to you as soon as possible.
Question: I lost the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin that came with my trailer. Can you send me a replacement?
Answer: Yes, but there is a $25.00 fee for issuing another certificate. We'll need to know the model number of your trailer, and its 17-digit serial number.

Bearings and Seals/Covers
There have been many threads on what to do about bearings and
Seals/Caps for the HF trailers. The discussions are around the metric
bearings that these trailers use. As of this writing I have not gotten a
satisfactory listing of maintenance part #s for the trailers here that
we have been touting. I have listed an incomplete list that may
help you get more information from HF for on going maintenance
for your trailers. These numbers may need revising.
Note: Check your trailer Owners Manual
for bearing and seal maintenance prior to running your trailer as well as on
going considerations of maintenance time frames. As a rule it is considered
wise counsel to check & or consider repacking wheel bearings before first use.
