I visited a metal store looking for aluminum panels today. The guy I talked to was really nice and walked me through their inventory of painted panels so I could look at the difference between .036, .040 and .063 sheets. While I was scratching my head and thinking about which panels to get, he said " And we have fiberglass." Well it was Filon! I haven't been able to find it anywhere around Denver. They stock it in 8'-6" and 4'-0" width rolls. 32' of the 4' wide Filon was about the same price as the painted aluminum sheets. They ship all over the place, I saw several orders for RV shops in Arizona and New Mexico. They also had RV doors, vents, water tanks and molding. Their website is awfull but here's a source for Filon.

Bruce,

Let's see 1.75 x 8.5=14.88 need 21' for the top that's 312.37 mostlikely cheeper than stainless if I could find it wide enough. Could use it on the sides and have a 3" strip along the bottom,left over from the top piece. That would be 193.00 for the sides, 506.00 for the complete outside of the tear, and a lot of scrap left over for the galley area, think you've done really good. I checked the web site, not much there, have to give them a call. Thanks Bruce.

The thing that sold me was that its hail resistant. All the roofs get replaced around here about every ten years. :roll:

We're getting ours replaced shortly.

Never seen it used as roofing material before but why not? We have it on the sides of our 5th Wheel, and have no complants. Not sure how to bond it to the tear, may just float it like you do Alu. It has (or the fith wheel does) a wood backing, think you could use wood glue?

No finishing, it has an integral gel coat. It also is the same color all the way through so scratches don't show as bad. Weight, I don't know. The 32' I have probably weighs about 30#. As Frank pointed out, this the same stuff that commercial motorhomes and trailers are sided with. You'll like this, they cut it to length with tin shears when I picked it up.

I plan to trim it with aluminum just the same as with the aluminum siding.

Yeah, and bends and creases won't show up like you cut aluminum.

If you wanted to match the Filon, you can get insert moldings in white and a beige color, as well as mill finish, at an RV repair shop. I can get all the polar white you could need here at the local shop..To bad I'm working in wood???

Dear All,

Kemlite has a new filon product called reflection, which is also coilable and comes in 1/8" thickness. It is high gloss.They say you no longer need a substrate?
