Computer non sequitur

Here's something to rattle your tree:

I would never use this thing myself, but I was installing Windows Vista at work and it occurred to me how Microsoft creates new operating systems. Here is the process.
o Take all the bits from the current operating system and put them in a huge sack.
o Add shiny bits left over from Christmas two years ago.
o Add bits "found" from other software vendors.
o Shake the sack real good and pour it out.
o Viola! Instant new operating system.

This explains how all the current pieces are always there, but never in the places you would expect them to be. How else can MS generate sales for new books?

You know, I think you might be on to something.

The other day I installed IE7, nothing but problems thereafter, to include major computer crashes. I uninstalled it, all works good. And on the advice of many (some on the board here) I installed FireFox, no crashes.

So I wonder how many updates MS will release before IE7 is stable.

I use Linux on every computer I have at home, but since I am a programmer, I have to use that O/S at work. Wish I didn't. :(

I see this linux OS mentioned on a regular basis here. Is there any way I can try this system without jeopordising my current OS.
Cheers

Yeah Paul.... Most folks that run a dual-boot system either partition their main hard drive into two virtual drives or just add another hard drive to run Linux. (or whatever)

You can also get a CD that you can boot to Linux from, that won't touch your XP partition.

I tried a live Ubuntu CD a year or so ago, that was pretty nice. Chell liked it, cause it resembled the Mac a little bit...

My drive is already partitioned with about 20gb that just sits there. Does this mean I could download linux to this section of my hard drive and not have any probs?

Paul

You could use that extra space for a Linux partition. Linux will create it's own unique partitions when you run the install.

I never had a problem installing Mandrake or Ubuntu...

I agree with 3beers... use the Live CD first...

I've installed Linux on my main computer, and it installs a boot loader which defaults to Linux. I found that to be a real pain, cause I could no longer push the on button on the computer and walk away. I always had to be sure I would specify which OS I wanted to boot to before I could walk away.

I'm downloading umbuntu now... It just occured to me I have a friends PC setting here that I fixed but don't have a legal copy of XP to install on it. (He had a bootleg copy of XP) So, he's getting umbuntu... If he wants Windoze, he can go buy a legal copy. I think this will do him just fine for surfing the net and email anyway. Cool beans. 8)

It looks better than SUSE I have played around with before...

I'm with you Linux people. I run dual boot on a laptop only and mulit flavor Linux on the home computer. If you have and old computer not in use try Linux in it. There are many "Linux Mirror sites" to download from on to CD or hard Drive. It is slightly differend at first start; but just play with it and it is just as easy to use. The home computer has 6 versions of Linux on it and two 120 gig drive attached ( one detachable external ) and not a one I have a problem with. Each version has it's own advantages and plus factors. The one laptop with Windo$ is completly clean of ALL Microsoft software except for the OS and Open Office / FireFox are loaded instead. I have never looked back and no problems. OO reads and writes both formats so you are not stuck. Now MS is tring to play catch-up.
