Hatch - Few Questions - Photos

Im working on the Galley Hatch Again This evening and I have a few questions from the pro,s on the photo I took of the back side of the Voyager...







Ok here are 2 extra ribs without notches in them... Should I laminate or screw these to the tear wall sides to double up the wall and make the ply Hatch Top more solid to lay on? Or is it even necessary to install these 2 on the wall sides and start the Hatch off a 1/4 inch in from there?

Because you end up screwing into the end grain I put sister blocks on both sides of the hatch ribs. These blocks are screwed into the top/bottom board and the rib without going into the endgrain. I hope it works.

I think most of your questions should be answered by the more experienced builders but you should join the extra ribs together and give them to your wife for Valentine's Day.

Okidoki .... Are you ready for the Big Classic Finn Galley Cabinetry Idea ? Jumpin from Galley Hatch to Cabinets... Hijacking my own thread... I just had to share it with you folks before the idea went away.....This persian rug is cool at 0255 in the morning..

Got on my Magic Carpet .... and I think it needs your jaa shuure or nej... Okay here is a photo of this evenings idea and drawing...
If you look at the 2nd photo of the waxed counter.. Will the Doors Match with it ??? Too Dark or ???

Im not yet sure about what to install on the left portion of the galley..
Water tank Maybe?

Here is the idea my wife wants for the stove ...The stove is sunk into the pull out countertop and it also has a safety glass for the cover...just like the sink...Notice there are the 2 Models to choose from..








Also on the Cabinet Doors it somthing like this for the pulls..

Heikki I would dearly love it if one of the more experienced builders would give us both an answer but this is what I have.


See the little blocks on the side of the ribs. I have a screw from the bottom board to the block, a screw from the side of the block to the side of the rib. I did this on both sides of the inside ribs. The outside ribs only have a block inside.

You get a lot of screws so you have to be sure where you put them. I also have screws into the end of the ribs and everything is glued.

Second Way: Another way might be to put a board from one rib to the other and use pocket screws into the side of the ribs. I would still put them into the end of the ribs and glue everything to death cause I am cautious. Screw everything down good.

Oh yeah and drill the ribs if you put screws in the ends cause they split.

Good luck. Maybe someone else has a better way.

Gee No Hatch Builders here... All built tears but nooooo hatches?

I have purchased Oak Board for laminating the Hinge area to make it stronger than normal..

The same will be that the bottom cross and top cross (end pieces of the hatch itself will have Oak as well..

Over kill I dont know but it will be strong...

Thats the update that I have for now...

So your waiting for me to make the mistakes... Okay if thats the case... so be it.

I'll give some opinions on what I did.
On the top My hinge required 3/8" gap.
Yes the hatch sides were 1/4" on both sides.
On the bottom of the hatch board.: On the floor I used a 3"x3" aluminum angle on the edge/
. My hatch sits on this flat on this angle when closed. The lip of the skin is 1" longer than the bottom hof the hatch That is where it seals against the side of the angle on the floor.
I used all oak for the hatch. I don't think you would need to put the extra ribs on the wall. I think it would make it chunky looking.

Not an expert but just some of the ways I did it.
