then I think I'll consider moving closer to Leonard.

But did you know that or Google it? Because it's the first one that comes up. I had to Google this Leonard guy.

Dale - was that the same guy who did that song "Suzanne" back in the 60's ? [ Suzanne takes you down - to a place near the river - you can hear the boats go by - you can spend the night beside her ?] That was a song that haunts me to this day.

I'm not Dale, but yep, that's the one.

And the song is not what you think.

Absolutely Leonard Cohen

Postby Guy » Thu Nov 16, 2006 12:48 pm

Dear Dale,

At a Leonard Cohen concert in 1970 in Forest Hills, New York the audience was clamoring for a second encore. After five minutes Leeonard came out and did said the following:

He walked slowly up to the microphone " People who eat meat want to get their teeth into something......."

He paused for five second, then said,

"People who don't eat meat want to get their teeth into something else....."

He backed off the mic, now paused for ten seconds as a collective hush came over the audience. Then he, again, grabbed the mic and said,

"If you have given this a moments thought you are lost!"

He turned and left the stage.
Regards,

Guy

If you have to ask (or feel the need to know) what Cohen's songs are about, it's like the bit he did on stage...you are lost. Just listen and enjoy...don't try to analyze them. Although somday, I wouldn't mind finding out what's with the monkey the plywood violin.

Leonard is a Canadian icon! And I have the first name the same so I better like him. My sister introduced me to his music back in the 70's with Suzanne. He is a songwriters songwriter, a musicians musician, even though he is anti-commercial. His list of songs is quite impressive -sisters of mercy, I'm your man, first we take manhattan, bird on a wire, hallelujah (which KD Land does a wonderful version of), tower of song (I ache in the places I used to play), etc. My favourite song though would be "everybody knows". A great song.
His voice actually got a bit more gravelly in his later years. Most of his lyrics carry a certain wit and sarcasm (check out Democracy off of his The Future album).
Well, looks like a better do a shuffle on the ipod and get some LC (hey those are my initials as well) back on!
Oh, and as for Suzanne "a place that can only be reached by surrender to profound sensibility and repudiation of reason".

I started this post because I was surprised as to how few people this side of the border knew who he is. And, I too am surprised that the topic is still getting attention.

Great composer. I like his song Suzanne. I believe he also did "Do you know the way to San Jose." and "This Guy"

WHOOPS! The last two were Burt Bacharach...pardon the spelling and pardon the whoops!

Neil Diamond does a really nice cover of Suzanne.
