While do some searching for Woodie Designs I came upon an interesting shop talk forum or site on wood.. Could be familiar to some already but anywho here it is ...Interesting reading material there.

http://www.oldwoodies.com/shoptalk_plywood.htm

I was trying to determine the placement of the Wood Decor and how do these builders determine where to locate them on the tear or car or... Or is it just a matter of taste and preference..

Thanks for the links Heikki. I forgot to look at them last night, they are blocked here at work. I guess I'm lucky this site isn't blocked. :R

oldwoodies.com with a domain name like that, no wonder they are blocked. Too bad it is just about wood. 8) If they blocked the T&TTT site at work, we'd be screwed.

I was not sure if you mentioned what "The Karelia" means. Is it a cool name or something?

The name Karelia is from the Finnish word that is Karjala...Karelia is a part of Eastern Finland.. but also nowadays a part of Russia.. unfortunately the Finns lost that territory during the war with them. It has one of the Largest fresh water lakes in Europe or Scandinavia named Latoga or Laatokka in Finnish. To most of us Finns Karelia is in the heart and soul because of its beautiful nature, islands and wildlife.. also its huge Birch trees that it was noted for and still is today...If you look at the map of Finland and Russia you can see the huge lake there.. All that used to belong to Finland...

In our hearts we want it back and it has been brought up on the negotiation table many times since the war.. however majority of the land has been abused by the Russians and it would take a lot of work by our Country to do so.. Many of the houses and buildings are in the condition that they were back then...also many left to rot.... plus we would get the people with the deal but also in our hearts they can stay but return the land...

The name Karelia is also known for Karelian Birch which is beautiful in its grain... So Nightcap.. I guess if I say ... The word Karelia may not hold a signifcant meaning to anyone else except to the Finns themselves.

Karelia has also has beautiful architecture and design in woodwork from the olden days..I guess thats how the name came to be on the new plan....

So that is a short explanation of Karelia and part of its Historical meaning....and what it means in the hearts of the Finns to this very day... I guess I dont have to say much about what we think of this neighbor to the East...And every Finn, Swede and Norwegian will tell you the same..

Maybe that will explain the name a little bit...

Finland would have been huge if we had that territory and the beautiful scenery, wildlife and also the camping places to go to... That lake has crystal clear water that is still drinkable in places due to its artesian wells.

A small portion of Karelia is on the Finnish side though. My wife and her parents are from Karelia...

I guess to me the word Karelia will mean an all Birch Woodie.. but with various types of it... ;)

It does explain it very well. I knew it had a meaning, since you are a deep individual. :) I know you do exceptional work, so I am sure this tear of yours will live up to the all the Finn's expectations. Oh, and thanks for taking the time to explain Karelia's meaning to me.

More than Happy to do so... and I,ll try to find some woodwork ideas that show the characterisitcs of Karelia... trim or cabinetry or....somthing...but for that I may need a professional woodcarver and woodworker to do for us.. but it sure is a nice thought...

Thank You for the nice comment...

NightCap and Friends

Here if you ever wonder about our language..and how many speak it. here is a discription of it in short... :o :o

Finland is officially bilingual: Finnish is the first language of 92%, and Swedish of 5.5% of the population. About 1,700 people in Lapland speak Sami (Lapp) languages. Swedish-speaking Finns, of which there are about 300,000, are concentrated mainly along the coastlines of the south and the south-west archipelago and along the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia to the west. Swedish is the official language on the Åland Islands.

Since Finnish is the mother tongue of only about five million people in the world, the ability to speak foreign languages is essential for Finns. This is an advantage to foreign visitors, because many Finns speak English, German or some other European language.

Unlike Swedish, Russian, English and almost all other European languages, Finnish does not belong to the Indo-European family. Together with its close relative Estonian and distantly related Hungarian, it is a member of the Finno-Ugrian group of languages, spoken by only about 20 million people in total.

Finnish has a reputation as a difficult language. Its characteristic features include an absence of definite and indefinite articles and of the distinction between male and female pronouns ("hän" means both "he" and "she"), and the rarity of prepositions, compensated for by the declension of nouns. For example: "auto" = car; "autossa" = in a (the) car; "autoon" = into a (the) car.

Classic Finn ;)

PS Am I a rare breed building these teardrops...UGH..

Heikki, this made me remember another one of my hobbies, old military rifles. I have about 15 old Moisen Nagants from that war. They were the primary issued rifles of that time. The Finns captured tons of them and reworked them. There is no comparison of the ones the Finns reworked, beautiful workmanship for sure! The stocks are magnificent, some of the repairs made to them are wonderful. A big thumbs up to the Finnish craftsmen of that time!

Actually, this design was named for the Karelia Suite by Sibelius - this is one of the few Finnish things I know!
