CycleKarts

Postby ALAN GEDDES » Mon Dec 04, 2006 8:38 pm

This will be an ongoing thread for those of us that have been bitten by the CycleKarts first mentioned in the Buffy-Porson thread. This is an antique looking racer based on 200 cc engine and Honda 17" x 1 3/4 or 2" rims with 2.50 x 17" tires.. 38" track and 66" wheel base, Max length is 98" and max width is 40". Max weight 250 pounds and only one wheel driven and braked. Engine is 200cc 6.5 hp Honda GX200 or similar. Please feel free to jump in and lets build some cars that are true to the original concept. Please folks update this with appropriate references and photos.

MJ, If you haven't read the other thread then please do so. And seeing as how I don't have the know how to transfer stuff arround this forum or post photos to it you could maybe move some of the info to this thread for us.

Alan,

Have you found a set decent set of plans? Also, I noticed you were thinking of parting out an old go cart for parts. In reading some of the material available, that didn't seem to be "in the spirit" of the official cyclekart concept. These are pretty cool, but I still have yet to build my motorized bar stool. Now that's a vehicle with a purpose.

I was thinking about an old go cart to scrounge maybe the rear axel, bearings etc and perhaps the steering gear and engine mount. I'm a no/low budget kind of guy. Totally in keeping with the original CK's except I'm not buying some parts new. Have been told on the www.http://metalmeet.com forum that Kuboto tractors use the 1" x 3" steel frame material that is needed as part of their shipping material. It may be a free or cheap source of that material. Clones of the engine can be had quite inexpensively also. I have found a fellow about 3 hours away who has one almost completed and will try to get with him soon for detailed photos.

Alan,
I'm interested in building a cyclekart if I ever get my trailer done. I would love to see a bunch of pictures of various components.

I'd be really interested in something like this, as there are a ton of small engines out there that could be scrounged to make it fly, I'm thinking about a snowmobile engine and torque converter type power train, of course that isn't in keeping with the original idea...My drawback is, where do you use one? Chances are, they aren't street legal, or can they be? Something to look into anyway...it's larger than a Vespa...I'd imagine that you'd have to do some research per your states laws. It's a lot of work for something that has to go to a specific location, especially if one isn't locally available to be run. I've got a guy in the neighbor hood that built a go cart out of 2x4's and a little briggs that runs up and down the road all the time, mini cycles, horse drawn carriages etc...but chances are, I'd get ticketed and I'd be willing to bet they wouldn't be too kind in towing it...Doug

This engine might be a bit of overkill for a cyclekart, but I do have one of these that has been modified for use in an old flat track racer.

Mine is missing the magneto and the rear cylinder, piston and rod assembly.

Ahhh Yes... "Now that's a vehicle with a purpose." I just scrounged up a nice go-kart to canabalize... I'm going to hafta build a Barstool Racer next. It won't take but a few hours to put it together... I do still need a barstool? And I, like Allan, "Am a no/low budget kind of guy". I hate to have to actually buy one. May just have to settle for a used toilet like the other silly kart I posted! :o

Here's the link that got the whole thread started; it should answer a lot of your questions.

If the poeple here at work would stop bothering me I could get the plans from the Stevensons drawn up.
I need to find some cyclekart track designs I would like to know how big to make the track.
