Great input guys. I have tried to blow up the original sketches but have not been able to get really clear ones to read some of the info. Pleas note that every site I have been to has stated that these things are more for fun than actually racing and that almost everyone that has built one has rolled it; so far without any major injuries. Think of them as a rolling piece of sculpture or something to putt around the campground in or take to the local car show or parade just for fun. Be careful and don't get hurt. Speeds of 30mph can be had with the 6.5hp motor which should be more than enough. Perhaps a removeable roll bar would be in order for competition purposes. I just want to have the look of an old wire wheeled car that I could never afford to have for real and something that is unique and fun to build.

GX22 clone for $139.00 at http://carrollstream.net and www.gokartssupply.com has the best price I've found yet for the Comet TAV-30 @ $159.00

Alan... Thanks for the good leads! That is a killer price on the 6.5hp Honda clone... You even get electric start for the $139.00 and $42. shipping. I'm gonna order me one. :thumbsup:

Be sure and check outputshaft to match up with Comet unit. Should be able to get compatible pieces. I didn't think to check that at the tme. Have found one source for buggy spring seat @ $45.00 but am still searching. I think this thing can be built for under $500.0 easily. My main worry is locating the wheels and fitting standard bearing to the metric hubs. The front wheels can be mounted using long metric bolts for the front axel shafts but the rear is going to need some thinking.

) The front wheels for many years of the Honda Shadow ACE are 17" and have a bolt face for the brake rotor that will work perfectly for a drive sprocket. they also have a 3/4" axle... so you could make up an axle with grade #8 bolts and tubing. For that matter, you could even use longer bolts and spacers to mount both a disk brake rotor & a drive sprocket to the wheel. Gee... have I solved enough problems for ya?

what is the width on that ace wheel?

FYI HF has a 6.5hp motor for $139.00 and with their 15% coupon that should run around $120.00-ish with tax and you get to bring it home with you. But you also don't get electric start. :thinking:

Those rims are what width ? The sprocket and brake are mounted on the axel well back from the wheel on a cart if I am not mistaken.

The Honda ACE wheels are about 3 inches wide from bead to bead. Bad news is they are right hard to come by used. Seems most salvage bikes are damaged in the front... So they often go for $200. or more on ebay. There is also a Honda dirt bike (CR80, CR85) that has 17" wheels, with aluminum rims that would work too. :thumbsup:

As for where the drive cog is... I can't see any reason you have to use a live axle like they did when you're only driving one wheel? Even if I had to use a jackshaft to get it hooked up to a drive cog on the wheel; it makes more sense to me. Then you could kinda center up the motor too. Just my thoughts on the subject...

The wheels seem to be the hard items to find. Local and only cycle graveyard doesn't have any and new ones would be pricey. Still looking.

Wheels are very hard to find. I'm tempted in purchasing 18 or 19 inch wheels or perhaps heavy duty 20 inch bicycle wheels. :shock:

Hello Knowledgable Fellows:

As I stated in my previous post, I purchased 20 inch heavy duty bicycle tires for my cyclekart due to the rare market for 17 inch Honda wheels. I plan to simply weld the 3/4 inch hub of the wheel onto a 1 inch "live" axle. The azuza axle is one inch but tapers down to 3/4 inches . However this 3/4 inch area is only 2 inches but the wheel hub is 3 1/2 inches in length.

I need to find a crude method to shave off 1/4 inch of the axle to get it to fit the 3/4 inch hub. Any suggestions since I don't own a lathe?

I thought I could use a bench grinder and a lot of time and elbow grease. Any ideas? :thinking:
