12v Car Style radio in Tear

Hi,

I again need some help with the electrical side of my installation. The tear is progressing nicely under the cover of my garage and soon I'm gonna have to start to think about laying wiring. Which brings me on to my question...

I plan on installing a 12v Car style radio / cd into the tear. On the standard ISO socket, which the radio has there are 8 connections.

1) Ground
2) Power Aerial (more for boosting the signal than actually moving the aerial i think)
3) Ignition turn on
4) battery
5) Accessory
6) Illumination
7) Left Speaker
8) Right Speaker (its only a cheapo 2 channel one)

I'm okay with 1, 2, 4, 7 and 8 but am struggling to work out the other connections. Number 4 is the connection to the fuse panel (battery) for the power so what do I do with the remote turn on (ignition)??
I haven't a clue what number 5) is for and as for number six, do I wire this into the lights circuit so when a light comes on the illumination comes on the radio???

Also one other point is, what should I do about the storing of stations and the time, because obviously when I'm not using my tear the battery will be disconnected to stop it draining.....

Can anyone help??

I use an auto Radio/CD player in my rig.

I hooked up all the 12 volt direct through a fuse panel. this includes

3) Ignition turn on
4) battery
5) Accessory


Power aerial is for a power Antenna for moving up and down


6) Illumination is for when your insturment lights are dimmed. your radio dims.

I too was confused about the wiring of my radio (Sony) but after reading and rereading the directions, I found out one of the hot wires is for the memory part of the radio. It keeps constant power to the radio so it will maintain preset station memory. I intalled a 12V rocker switch with a small LED pilot light to remind me to turn it off. Otherwise it will continue to draw power from the battery and after a long storage, your battery will be drained.

Alex, The #3 ignition one is where I bought an 20 amp LED lighted switch at Walmart to act as my ignition switch. When the switch is on I see this small blue light ( comes in red too ) and the radio will work. When turned off the radio memory is saved through the battery hookup # 4. I'm guessing accessory is the other side of ignition and you may not need to connect it if #3 is connected. You'll need to play around with it a bit. I would buy a "Battery Tender" and keep the battery charged up all the time to extend battery life and for convience. This way you won't loose the stations in the radio's memory. Danny

The battery tender is a very good idea, I think i'll have to invest in one of these.

Maybe there is another method for your antenna Alex?

Danny forgot to mention his idea of having an internal antenna that you
might want to try first before going through the trouble of putting a hole in
your trailer for an external pop uP antenna. Danny's trailer as you see has
an aluminum skin and this antenna still works for him.

Maybe Danny will expound on the use of this antenna for you?

Thanks Steve, I did forget as I can't see the antenna. In this picture you can see the antenna at the rear and at the top. Also note that I was able to remove and replace the radio in less than 30 seconds by the use of 4 cabinet catches. I hope this helps, Danny

This maybe a stupid question but do the preset channels work everywhere you go? or is it "XM" radio ?

Local stations are local just like in the car when you travel out of your local area. Don't know about satellite radio but would assume a satellite would not be local , Danny

Hmm, I like the idea of an Internal Aerial.

At the moment I am planning on getting the signal from a Status roof mounted aerial that also provides the TV signal.

It has two outputs, one for TV and a spare. The spare I was planning on using for the Radio but I suppose a dedicated Radio aerial would give me better performance??
