Computer trouble

Postby Steve Frederick » Tue Dec 26, 2006 8:53 pm

My pc power supply bit the dust...er...went out in a puff of smoke!!

I think that my hard drive is ok. Can I just pop the H/D into a new tower, ( I wanted to add another CDRW drive) and expect it to take off?
If I put it into a new pc, can I use it as a second H/D?
I have a lot of stuff on the H/D, applications etc, most backed up to a stand alone H/D.

What is the collective thought on the subject? :throw PC:

Steve,
Did the power supply damage anything else? If not you should be able to put a new power supply in. All it does is convert AC to DC. ;)

If not you can always put your drive in another computer. 8)

Steve, I had that happen once, I installed a new power supply and was up and running with no other problems. Most likely it popped a capacitor, that's what failed in mine. I would think this would be your best choice for something to start with.

If the power supply's the only thing that went out, you could just replace it. It's been a while since I've looked into computer parts, but I think new power supplies are fairly inexpensive.

On the other hand if you're set on putting the HD in another computer, there shouldn't be any problem doing it. There should be plenty of places online that go into detail on the subject.

I'm not sure! I wanted to add one or two CDRW's, for build manual production anyway! I know that the supply change-out is a simple one..I've done a couple!
I'm really just trying to figure out whether to get a new pc, and try to transfer stuff from the old H/D to the new one, or fix/upgrade the old (6-year) pc?

First choice:
Steve ... a P/Supply is a relatively easy replace to try.
You might get a larger wattage supply if you think the new CDRW is going
to drag it down. It might be cost effective to replace the supply now and
buy a new system later? There are many considerations I am sure.

Second answer:
You can use the H/Drive as a slave drive or a spare drive if you have old
Interface and you move uP to a serial drive configuration with a new
computer. Answer = yes you can get your data off the H/D if it is not
harmed with the loss of this P/S that just failed.

Maybe if you get a new PC you will get the new oPsys from Microsoft in the
months to come. That way you can start afresh and put your old Drive in
and keep on going with your applications.

Generally speaking a new system might have the CDRW built in with the
software you want at a price point that would be worth not having to put in
a CDRW in the old system and all that in-tales with your instillation efforts?

Steve, If you buy a new computer now you can rite it off your taxes as an expense of your manual production. $>

In order to transfer the hard drive from one computer to another, the best way is to make it a slave. If you make it the master it won't run right because all the motherboard and bios settings will be wrong. When making it the slave you have to change the pins on the back of the drive from master to slave.... should say on the front of the drive. You have to install a new operating system on your master, if not allready done. When the computer is up and running, you can safely delete the old O.S. from your slave drive using windows explorer. Unfortunately all programs and applications on your old hard drive will not work and need to be re-installed on your new master.

OK, now that the peanut gallery has spoken, let the Old wise one speak. 8)
Steve, if you put the old drive in a new computer, you'll be fine, as long as it's the new D: drive. if you want to use the old drive as the primary drive in the new computer, you may have issues with Windows not liking the new motherboard and peripherals.
the power supply blowing more then likely didn't damage the drive motor, nor any other componite so if you wanted too, you could put a new power supply in and go on about your merry way.

Snip the power supply blowing more then likely didn't damage the drive motor, nor any other componite so if you wanted too, you could put a new power supply in and go on about your merry way.

Or you could climb down off the pompous soap box, scroll up and discover that several people have already made this suggestion. ;) 8)
