This should not be as painful as losing weight, quitting smoking or joining a gym....

Resolve to support your local community by spending your money with local companies.

Search out the local grocer, eatery and mercantile companies before they all are run out of business by the big chains. You might meet a new friend along the way. If you just spend 10% of what you would normally it will go a long way. Money spent locally tends to stay local and keep your community strong.

If you need a bargain, check out the local thrift store and garage sales and want ads.

Resolve to be a good neighbor.

Other suggestions:

-Instead of contributing to mega-outfits like the United Way or the Red Cross (which often have high overhead so less of your money gets to those who need it), donate to local charities.

-Give blood regularly.

True !!! I've tried to do that when I can.

Live in a suburb of OKC but work over here on the higher income level side of town. Lowes, HD , Walmart , big drug store, and party store etc are within lunch hour time of the job, but I would rather spend the money in my own 'burb for the taxes to go to MY city not the big city .

Oh, ps.... I don't really do "new years resolutions" either... more like just "changes"...

example.... several years ago I took the word "worry " out of my vocabulary and my life has been so much better.

also took out the word "hate" ... I might "not care for" or "really dislike" something or someone but hate is a much more derogatory word.

Now I'm not sure what my next thing is....

None for me, although I do support the "buy local" idea.

I wake every day and I love my wife, kids and grandkids. That keeps me happy.

You know--money is way underrated...

By people who have enough of it.

It's real easy to say how it doesn't matter all that much--as long as you have enough to pay your mortgage, utility bills, to put food on the table and clothes on the family's back, and take a real vacation once a year.

If you don't have enough, well--that's a whole different story.

My resolution is to quit my job by March 1st, even if it means working at a supermarket as a 50-year-old stock boy in my neighborhood. Because my current job is NOT paying me enough money, and I feel they're taking advantage of me. (Although I'm sure they're gonna come up with a lot of bucks once I give notice.)

Money--it's good. Don't ever criticize it.

"Donkey Philosophy 101"
One day a farmer's donkey fell into an abandoned well.
The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally, he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; so it just wasn't worth it to him to try to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They each grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.
Realizing what was happening, the donkey at first cried and wailed horribly. Then, a few shovel-fulls later, he quieted down completely. The farmer peered down into the well, and was astounded by what he saw. With every shovel-full of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up on the new layer of dirt. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off, to the shock and astonishment of all the neighbors!
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to not let it bury you, but to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping-stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!

Also, the donkey kicked the crap out of the guy that tried to bury him. Which brings me to another moral for this story: When you try to cover your ass, it always comes back and gets you.
