Security question

Was wondering what people use as an anti theft device, for lack of a better term. Since these trailers are so light, small and easy to move what options or ideas are there to ensure that my teardrop would stay in my yard or at the campground while unattended?.

I have purchased a hitch lock... plus I have a lock system that locks up the wheel...

If that dont work, well

How about a removable hitch?

A gun might work, but not when you are gone.. I use this one... on the driver side, so I won't miss taking it off... but that would be hard to do, as I load from both sides (the trailer gets to carry 'stuff' when we travel). I carry a storage box with the lock, leveling blocks, etc. and it lies flat in the bottom. I rarely use it, but there are sometimes when I do... like one time I was on a rise above a lake, and while out to dinner I kept having images of kids thinking it would be funny to roll it back about 8 feet and down into the lake. That's when I decided to buy the lock.

Northern Tool carries several different styles of trailer locks, as do others. I tend to like things simple (hence the teardrop). I plan to use a coupler lock in conjunction with a chain looped through both wheels. The only way to steal it is to pick it up and carry it.

But if I chain it to a tree..Long ago and far away, when I was in college, I drove a tow truck at night. One of our steady contracts was repossessions. You would not believe how many people chain their cars to a tree, fencepost, et al to try to beat the repo dude. We just carried bolt cutters.

Jerry...unfortunately you bring up a good point...If someone wants it bad enough they'll get it....as a repo guy...chances are, you came home with something more often than empty handed didn't you?...if you're worried while storing at home...keep it out of site. Doug

The best anti theft device in your yard is good neighbors. At the campground---same thing. Camp with a crowd might help too. If you camp out alone normal locks will keep away the mild trouble makers. The rest will find a way. I'm getting insurance.

I used to ride with a friend of mine in his tilt-bed and wrecker and we almost always came back with what we went after.
There are so many ways to steal something that's locked up it's almost scary.

I keep mine in the garage when at home. And when I'm camping. Let them have it if they think that they can take it without someone asking them 'Just what the hell are they doing, it doesn't belong to you?' Besides, I'll get it back if they do get away with it. And most likely there won't be any damage. My Security System was a little pricey and hasn't been tested yet but as a backup, I carry a 357 which most likely won't do any good because if someone takes the tear, they'll also get the gun.

If you haven't already built your frame you might design it so the tongue is removable. I did that to mine. When I leave the campground I just either put the tongue in the camper and lock it up or I throw it in the back of my tow vehicle and keep it with me.
