Cast Iron Fry Pan; warped

Postby Arne » Wed Jan 03, 2007 5:59 pm

I have recently discoverd a couple of c/i fry pans in the basemant. They all are a bit warped in the middle from over heating, I guess... so, they don't sit flat on the stove... is there any magic way to re-flatten them? I would consider torching them and applying pressure, but not sure it would work.

Nope. I think they are warped for good. They are called cast iron because they are cast in molds. If they warp due to uneven heating they permanently misshapen. They will still cook, even if they wobble....

and fine on a campfire/charcoal, too.

How warped are they?

If they didn't cost you anything, you can try putting them in the oven on the "clean" cycle, then running out in the back yard and dropping them in a washtub of cold water.

BAD, BAD don't ever put hot cast iron in cold water, unless you want a 2 piece skillet.

They are liveable.. each just has a warped slightly deep spot in the center, so they don't have that nice new flat bottom on them.... and they would rock a bit on a flat surface.

And don't ever put a real cold one on a real hot stove and leave it. Make this really neat twang sound and crack.
