Vegemite

Postby Lesbest » Wed Jan 03, 2007 8:07 pm

Maybe PaulC can help with this one---- What do you do with Vegemite besides spread it on toast with butter? A friend of mine gave me a new jar and that is what he said to try but it must be an aquired taste--too salty. 160mg per serving- 1tsp. Any suggestions? Thanks, Les

I think vegemite and marmite were developed to provide nutrition during the war (kind of a yeast paste). They were not developed for their taste (obviously)/g/.... far as I know, just spread on bread or toast, that's it. Remember, during the war, butter was in very short supply, so they really didn't put butter on first... just vegemite.

4 chicken fillets
Marinade:
1 spring onion, finely chopped

6 spring onions,
cut into 3cm lengths
2 teaspoons VEGEMITE
1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon plum sauce
1/2 bunch silverbeet,
roughly chopped
rice or noodles, to serve

HEAT a frying pan or wok, add the oil, and cook the steak and garlic in small amounts until beef is just browned.

It's also useful for adding to vegetable soups and broths rather than adding just plain salt. This will require some experimentation on the users part. The best advice is to add to suit your taste.
As for the bread part of it, once again use to suit your taste requirements. If the recommended amount is to salty, try less.
Most people make the mistake of spreading it like Peanut butter, even I blanch at that amount on a slice of bread.

Paul...I had a buddies wife who was Aussie not want to taste the grilled Rattlesnake dip I made, with cream cheese and chipotle peppers....after a discussion about Vegemite, I reminded her that at least it "tasted like chicken" ....we agreed to disagree...   Doug

So what exactly is it? What's in it? From Paul C.'s recipes, it sounds like its used like we use soy sauce for seasoning although soy sauce can't be spread on bread.

Hah, Brick, the joke's on you! Several years ago on the Gold Wing email list an Australian was reminding everyone that if you take out the rear wheel to fix a puncture, it's vital that you lubricate the drive splines when refitting it, or it seizes in place - he said anything would do for a few hundred miles, even Vegemite.

Now the Brits and the Aussies don't often agree on the relative merits of their two countries' yeast spreads (Vegemite and Marmite), so some smart-arse Brit said that if you could do a few hundred miles using Vegemite, you could do a few thousand using Marmite. Ended up in a war. Plus the Yanks kept asking what the **** all the arguing was about.

So repacking your wheel bearings ain't as far off as you thought.......
