Vegemite

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Years ago I was in Christchurch, NZ enroute to the Antarctic with the Naval Support Force. The Bishop of Christchurch held an annual service at Christchurch Cathedral for those going down to the ice, followed by a small reception. At the reception I took a bite out of a little finger sandwich and whispered to the Bishop, "Pardon me Father, I don't mean to be rude, but I think your peanut butter's gone bad." He laughed, clapped me on the back and said, "Ow, that's Vegemoit - it's suppowsed to toiste loik that!"

Because of the shortage of butter on both sides, the Germans ate "Schmalzbrot," which was bread & lard. I think I might actually prefer the Vegemite...

Thanks for the recipes PaulC now I can try to do something with it, and not feel bad about not using it. My buddie is from NZ, and was a British Leyland mechanic. Was on the Factory racing team with Mini's in '59 when they were introduced. Boy does he have stories to tell around the campfire, Race round Australia, etc. Hydrolastic fluid, Woosleys, half the time we don't know if its a storie or baloney. How about a slasher tube so you don't miss any of the football game. Thanks again. Les

I'm surprised that the Germans had lard - in England it was in short supply like butter and the ration was the same for both - 2 ounces per person per week.

The interesting side of rationing is that what the population ate was very strictly controlled, both during the war and for many years afterwards (because Britain was bankrupt), and at no time before or since has the population been healthier.

And on the subject of bankruptcy, this and complete economic collapse (like in Germany after WWI) was only avoided by a four-billion dollar loan from the US in 1947. The last repayment on that loan was made last year! Thanks for that, guys.

I'm only repeating what my German professor (who was in fact Austrian) told me.

No big surprise there - they did real work and weren't able to overstuff themselves the way we do. Don't know about your side of the pond but I've never seen so many obese kids in my life. IMHO that's a form of child abuse.

You're welcome!
