Hostile & Abusive

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Yeah… All this PC stuff is idiotic? For most of our history dark skinned people were called “colored people” The correct term was actually Negro. Somewhere along the line that wasn’t good enough? …It got changed to “black people.” I’ve never seen a black person? For that matter, I’ve never seen a white person either? Identifying a group of people by their skin coloring is just stupid. Now, they are calling Negroes “African Americans”??? …Even if they have been here for 10 generations? And, a lot of their ancestors didn’t even come from Africa. Many persons of color came from South America, the South islands, and other places around the world. They don’t call us Caucasians “European Americans”??? …Even though many of our ancestors came from there. Most of the time labels such as this do more harm than good, and really just serve to keep us from thinking of people as people.

I kind of agree with Ira… Native Americans have been maligned and abused throughout our history. I wouldn’t blame them is they wanted symbols representing them used in a positive way? The “Redskins” is really an ethnic slur as much as “Nigger” is a derogatory way to refer to Negroes. Maybe we ought to stick with animal names like Jaguars, Dolphins, and Bears? At least the animals can’t complain about their names being used to denote how badass the team is? Of course, if the team owners really want to create mental images of warriors and violence… They could start using things like “The Baltimore Humvees” or the “Atlanta Abrams Tanks” or how about the “Miami RPG’s???

Oh yeah, The flag of the South. (rebel) is the flag of a foreign nation and should not be flown in the United States above the Stars and Stripes.

I wouldn't consider the Confederate Flag as that of a foreign nation, because it was part of "our" nation that decided to break away.... Treason if you will. It's a good thought provoking idea though. Were they "sovereign"? It could be that the above statement is true from a historical sense! Interesting!

My guess was that is was not sovereign, but a break away rebellious entity that needed spanked/fought/???????

Texas was it's own country before joining the union, hmmmmmmmm. What flag did they have back then?

Just so there is no miscommunication. Nothing should be every flown above the United States flag!

Boy, by that definition, we, the United States are not a real country. First the States had control by the constitution and every right to disolve thier part in the Union. The federal government was never supposed to be able to decide how a state was run. Nor was it to have a standing army that could make war on an individual state.

The Confederacy was in fact a separate government supported by the will of it's people and a standing army. They did not commit treason but infact disolved thier part in a voluntary union. They secceded! Like if Finland decided to not be part of EU.

Imagine the supprise of my students when the found out Lincoln only freed the slaves of the States that secceded.

First Flag of the Republic of Texas. Designed and made in Goliad Texas and flown over fort La Bahia in Goliad. The one in the photo is hanging on the wall of the quarters in La Bahia.

The reason why this is important is the Bison just went Div I and UND is going Div I next year.

We are Div I in hockey and have a premier team. The Sioux were at a tourny at Dartmouth this last week end and one person had a protest sign. The AD apologized to Dartmouth students a few weeks ago that we were invited. The Dartmouth Pres. apologized to UND. There were no incidents of protest.

Some Div. I schools will not schedule a team with this type of name.

Then that's the D-1 schools' loss, no?
We had a school rivalry, when I was a kid, with Midland Lee. (Yes, it was named after Robert E. So are schools in Houston and Austin and Galveston and ... anyway.) Midland Lee's mascot was, naturally, the Rebels. Their spirit flag was the Stars & Bars.

Back when we had That Idjit in the White House as Texas' governor, his administration tried (I don't remember whether they made it or not; I don't go to HS football in the Permian Basin any more) to take away not just the Stars and Bars flag but the Rebels mascot and the Robert E Lee school name -- not just in Midland, but that was the hi-profile case, because at that time Midland Lee was *the* high school football team west of I-35 that was worth a bucket of warm spit. The admin SAID they were moving to head off a threatened lawsuit by a youngster at some OTHER school who found the flag, mascot & school name "discriminatory" and who planned to sue the school, which was owned by the state, yada yada yada.

But I think they did fail trying to force Seminole to abdicate its' team names (Indians and Maidens).

What I find interesting is that most of the names we know/use for First Nations folk were originally jibes, tribal names we learned from other/enemy nations.
