Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Campaign Finance

Postby Joseph » Sat Jan 06, 2007 4:43 pm

Rather than add more to the other political discussion going on here, I thought I'd start a new thread.

The comments about "election money" on the other thread made me wonder: has anyone here ever changed who they were going to vote for because of any campaign advertising blitz?

I'd start a poll but I think polls should be left for things relevant to T&TTTs.

Pesonally I can't imagine basing a vote on the blurbs, especially what last minute blurbs might be saying...to do so would be like not doing your homework properly...of course the majority here are MUCH more informed than the common herd...I hope........

I find the advertising blitz more annoying than anything.

Why would the last minute lies and false promises change your mind.
Their record speaks for itself and it often is not what they are saying in the blurbs.

In my experience, almost everyone believes that "While advertising works on other people, it doesn't affect me".*

However advertising in general definitely works, so this belief must be wrong in most cases. Entrenched Republicans or Democrats may not be swayed by advertising, but then they aren't the target of advertising, since their votes are not on offer.

It would be hard to believe that the Swift Boat Veterans ads had no effect on the last presidential campaign.

I love this style of conversation due to the fact that it does not matter what we say or think. At the end of the day they will do what they have been doing for years and that, normally, has no bearing on the general population.
This also goes for being influenced by any means.

Paul,

How true! That's why I'd like to see them ALL voted out! I mean, no incumbents re-eleted. THAT would show them we are tired of the same ole BS.

Most of the elections when the negative ads come I am suspicious first.
And don't change my mind as it is usually a muddy lie of sorts.

My rule of thumb is who ever is spending the most for advertising is usually
corrupt and their proposition or candidate isn't the one I should be voting for.

Another key is looking for those that support some political ad. Usually just
hidden from view is the big money interests that would loose out if the wrong
person or ballot measure was to pass.

I guess the word to the wise is follow the money.

As most have said don't trust politicians or skunks.
The smell will soon foul everything about you.

The other thing I would like to point out, is that you Merkans :) can choose if you wish to vote or not. Down here they are that frightened that we will all sit at home on election day that they fine us if we do not place our ballot paper in the box.

My thoughts on politicians, you can tell a lot about them by the enemies that they make.
So yes an add may change my mind, but not the way the add was intended.

Never..the ad's are funny, but i'm not gonna change my vote for any ad...when Hillery runs for president, and films a ad in the nude, telling me personally i can have sex with her daughter...i still wouldn't vote for that lying cuss... :R

"I'm (enter name her) and I approved this message."

Who really cares that you have approved a lie. Politician is nothing more than a four letter word.

I am thankful that I have no politician friends. I have no lawyer friends. I would have it no other way. I much prefer honest people.

Think about this. If you vote out all the American politicians everytime, who is going to know the dirty secrets of the career people who run the country. Who will keep them in line. (of sorts) 8)

Paul--- Wonder what your country would do if everyone paid thier fine. 8) Gee we could do that for free. We just need to have a law that doesn't allow anyone to take office if not voted for. ;)

Touche!

It works--ALL of it. That's why they spend the money.

Andrew, are you familiar with the classic Daisy Girl commercial that Lyndon Johnson ran opposing Barry Goldwater in 1964? It basically won him the election, but it WAS so powerful and upsetting to some, that it only ran ONE time.

The quality here ain't great, but here's the link:
