can I do this

I have this small space, 16w x 20L x 6d. Realisticly can I make that a shallow drawer? I am thinking of splitting the 20 to made a drawer inside and in the galley so am going to loose some of the depth also.

Material suggestions welcome too.

Miriam,

If you made all that space for the galley and not make it a drawer but a cabinet you could use it to store utensils and knives in a vertical position. I am not sure what I would store in a drawer that has a final depth of 5" (based on 1/2 " material for the drawer front and back.

yup, no drawer... I would put a 3-4 inch lip on it and use it for storage, or a door... but I don't like doors. you could divide it horizontally and get 2 storage areas.

Hi Miriam, I always work on the principle of doing what I think will suit our purposes. Go ahead and do what you are thinking of doing. I did and it works for us.

If you put sliding drawers there, you're taking away mnore space. Maybe you can come up with a cute solution to make it a "sort of" open area that hides the contents.

But your original measuremets are cnfuing me.

If I'm picturing this right, you could make a door that folds down into a cutting board, and have some hooks on the back of the space to hang kitchen utensils... then again, I'm just assuming that this is in the galley.

Words don't work for me. Sorry. Perhaps this will make it clearer why a drawer instead of something else. One side is inside the cabin and the other in the Galley.


There is a shelf above it that will have the TV and the Galley side of the TV will have a door. I think?

So what do you really think And what do I make it out of.

AuntieM, have you seen the pics of the "big drawer" in our build album...we love it...built outta 1/2 sandply...mounted on full length sliders and holds bunches...it is 2' deep, 28"s wide and 7"s tall........

Hey the drawer is great. Thanks MJ. This might work well. Maybe I can skinny a couple of inches from the battery compartment to make the galley drawer taller.

Miriam...just an idea. You might want to check with someone like DannyHalfdome, PodunkFla etal...they have cabinet making experience, professionally....for me...in the past for a drawer that size, I use 3/8 sides and back and rout a groove and install 1/4" material for the bottom. I don't know what you want for a front, but you could use that material from the get go, or make a false front and install it after you have the drawer built. a groove routed in the front and back will allow a drop in divider and that can be divided also. Thanks Doug. I have lots of cutoffs that are 3/8, 1/4 and 1/8. I have been playing with it and find if I give up the big 75" counter that is such a problem and make a tower I can get the galley drawer to 8" high. Just need to make seperate drawers. The cabin will still be shallow. I just need to find some plywood that isn't made in china.

I went to HD and Lowes yesterday and it was sad. I haven't gotten used to it. Your post convinced me to keep looking. I make good boxes so I may be better than the framing I have now.

You could make one drawer that you can open from either side... something like a passthrough from galley to cabin.. (Like a jail cell.. slide it out.. Place dinner in shelf... push through to cabin)... Mike wouldn't even have to get out of bed.....
