Best Type of Insulation for Subfloor?

Postby sandman » Tue Jan 09, 2007 10:45 am

Hey Guys,

I am ready to install insulation on the bottom of my subfloor. What type would be best to use? The Pink Foam Board or the White EPS? Would be best to install it be spray adhesive and screws with fender washers?

Will you be sandwiching the rigid insulation or leaving it exposed underneath? If exposed, I'd rely on construction adhesive and seal up the edges the best you can so the wind won't pull the "board" off. Rather than screws with washers, consider a 6" wide strip of plywood, aluminum or similar to span the entire width of the insulation. Just don't seal the whole thing in so it holds water.

If you're planning on using this in Texas, you may not need the underinsulation. A mattress can meet most needs. Laying a thin layer of insulation under the mattress, like water heater insulator, will ward of some cold too.

I just used the white stuff, foil side down, exposed, wedged it in real tight. Also, since my asphalt undercoating was still tacky, it kind of got glued on by that.

I stuck a FEW screws in there with washers, but I didn't go nuts or anything. It hasn't fallen out yet, and athough I only have 10 hours of travelling on mine, it doesn't look like it's going anywhere.
Here we go again!

You gotta admit:

Did I make your day with this avatar or NOT? A lot better than Rich's HELICOPTER, huh!?

She's one of my bartenders, and I'm gonna be doing a photo shoot for her because she wants to do some modeling--basically trade show stuff, nothing too high end, but you never know.

Is she hot or WHAT!?

And what hurts even more is that she's the sweetest girl in the whole wide world.

If I were covering a whole house, I would balance the lower cost of the white beadboard against the superior properties of the extruded polystyrene foam (pink or blue or whatever, depends on brand). For a trailer floor I would certainly use the extruded material, which is much less likely to disintegrate into little annoying beads. It comes in varying densities and compressive strengths, and I assume that this application could use the cheapest or most readily available type.

I have been planning to insulate the bottom of my travel trailer, which has a plywood floor. I was planning on the screw-and-washer approach, partially so I can remove and re-install if required.

Also, I was thinking I would need to use some sort of protective skin, such as the thinnest fiberglass panel I could find. I will be on gravel occasionally, and I doubt exposed foam would survive well. That's another reason for wanting to use screws - they would hold the panel, which would serve as a really big fender washer.

Does this make sense to anyone?

Ok...ok...I'll put myself at risk for ridicule on overbuilding...but I feel your pain... 1/4 inch ply top, 3/8 bottom, glassed with 1 inch extruded foam...Yeah...let me have it. Makes a nice dance floor though!!!
