Source for 3/4" insulation??

Postby NutmegJoe » Wed Jan 10, 2007 7:54 pm

Hello Everyone!!

I got my frame home last week and over the weekend I built my floor. Just need to insulate it...and I can't find any 3/4" foam insulation sheets. Home Depot and Lowes around here don't carry it.

Do I have to special order this stuff or am I missing an obvious source?

You all have helped so much already...I hope you can help with this!

I can't imagine a Home Depot in Colorado Springs (burr) not having the rigid insulation. They lay the stuff flat and upright so maybe you missed it, look again or get the store manager to find it for you. The worst you could do is find it at a local lumber yard or builders supply. :D Danny

I've had my best luck at smaller yards for 3/4 insul and 1/8 ply.... the big box stores sell the higher volume stuff. just call around and you should be able to find it.... I had to go about 15 miles, but they had it with foil on both sides.

Smaller yards are surviving by being niche players.

I just called the Home Depot at 2250 Southgate Rd, Colorado Springs, 80906 - (719) 471-0054 and the guy said he has it in the 2' x 4' size but he seemed unfamiliar with the stock so you may have better luck looking for yourself. He had it in 1/2" & 1 1/2" in 4'x8' like my local Home Depot so the must have the 3/4" too. I bought all mine including the pink stuff there. :) Danny

Finding 3/4 pink foam insulation can be hard. It's not sold everywhere... it's a regional thing.... That from Dow's (maanufacturer??) website.
I used 3/4" styrophoam.. you know...the white stuff that breaks into all these little pebbles........ ;)

Not to hijack but is there a big difference between the pink and the white? Which is better?

I tried the 3/4" and found the thickness to be not uniform. It was too thick by 1/8", not much but it doesnt compress.

I used 1/2" foam with 1/4" silver bubble insulation. The bubble is a good radiant barrier.

I could be wrong but from what I deciphered from the specks on each product it seems that the pink is better. I used the pink everywhere but the roof. ;) Danny

I purchased my 3/4" insulation from Home Depot, seems odd that it wouldn't be available at all their locations. Like Danny suggested, perhaps you should call your local HD stores. It may turn out to be something they have to order for you.

Home Depot had the pink (Owens Corning) and Lowes had the blue (Dow) both in 1/2" and 1 1/2" only. They had the white kind in 3/4" but it seemed like it would fall apart...like John said...little pebbles.

I'll call some local lumber yards tomorrow and see what I can find.

Thanks!

I didn't ask if they could special order it...if I can't find it, I'll try that.

The white... Styrofoam has a much lower R rating than the pink or blue Polystyrene.. (I think that's what it's made of..). I used the white styro for the walls, and 1" and 1/2" pink for the ceiling. Since I don't have my doors on yet, I can't tell how good it is yet.........

My insulation board is yellow with kraft paper on both sides (one side is silver). It looks like Great Stuff that was molded into a board.

Shelly, take note of what Steve (Sonetpro) said above:

If you're going with 1 1/2" of insulation for the roof--which you should where you live--it can be a real pain to get two 3/4" pieces to fit in there, with the curve of the roof and all. So what he did, using the bubble, sounds like a great idea.

Otherwise, you may have to kerf one layer of the insulation.

I myself just COULDN'T get the two pieces in mine, no matter how I tried. And I didn't have the right equipment to kerf it.

Being in Florida, I figured 3/4" was enough for me anyway, but in frio Colorado, you definitely want 1 1/2" for the roof.
Here we go again!
