Houston, We Have Walls!!!!

Postby sandman » Sat Jan 13, 2007 5:09 pm

Hey Folks,

As bad weather looms across West Tennessee, I decided to stay off the dirtbike this weekend and do some work on my Teardrop/Cycle Hauler. With the floor finally completed, I went to Home Depot and picked up a piece of 1/2" Sandelply Plywood to make my profile template. I managed to loft the coordinates as provided in Steve Wolverton's cowper plans. I traced out the profile to my liking and took my Jigsaw and cut the profile out being careful to stay outside the lines. As soon as I finished with the Jigsaw, It was time to get out my new Belt Sander and begin shaping the template to it's final shape. After lots of standing back and eyeballing the shape, I got to where I liked the overall appearence.

I then laid out the template on my sawhorses and laid down my first sheet of 3/4 Baltic Birch Plywood on top. I got out my router and installed my flush trim bit and began routing out the first wall. The router quickly made work of the plywood and then it was time to lay out the second piece of Baltic Birch for the other wall. I finished it up and laid out both walls and clamped them together and took the belt sander and shaped and smoothed out both walls.

Here's some pics of my freshly routed walls.

Can I get some opinons on how the profile looks to you guys? This is my first build ever and I value you guy's input.

Thanks a bunch, MiriamC. You are always the first to answer most of my posts here lately. Are you living on here or what? Anyway, thanks for the positive encouragement. Now I just have to figure out how to mount the walls to the subfloor using MadJack's method with the angle irons. :?

Sandman,

Your walls look good. You're getting up some momentum... keep it going!

Sandman I strongly discourage mounting walls. Best leave that for your motorcycle.

Yes I live on here. :) It is on most of the day and I read every thread, say hi to almost all Newbies and eventually tease everyone brave enough to post. Consider your self teased. ;) :D 8)

That is a pretty profile. Do you plan a 5' wide tear?
'Cause that looks like the proportions at 5' wide would be sweeeet.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess I am officially teased, MiriamC

Mike-Yes, Momentum has been very slow but I am picking up some steam. I had to stop working to watch the NFL playoff's but I'll be back at work on Sunday. Thanks to this awesome site, I think I can actually build a teardrop.

Laredo-Glad you dig the profile. I really like the Little Guy Teardrop so luckily I came across Steve's Cowper plans to help me build this replica. My teardrop is actually going to be 6 feet wide. I am building a Teardrop/Cycle Hauler designed after the Little Guy Sport model. My teardrop will have a 4 foot x 6 foot cargo deck in front of the teardrop to haui my dirtbike.

Classic Finn-Thanks for the positive comments. Yes, the fun has already begun....just wished my nerves would calm down. Everytime I make a cut, I am thinking I am screwing up but so far everything has turned out ok.

Nice profile and I like the grain on the plywood. I would varnish it for the woody look rather than paint or aluminum.

sm, looks good to me...remember we used 1x1x1/16 Al angle...not iron...it looks like you intend to cover the frame with the walls...so take that measurment(frame) add the thickness of the floor and mount the angle at that point...I would suggest making a guide board so that the angle is precisely located at the same place on both sides...being just a little off can really screw ya up when it comes to skinning the top...especially if using aluminum...
