Remedy for Sinus Pressure??

Postby CPASPARKS » Sun Jan 14, 2007 8:52 pm

I have been suffering with a sinus infection for the last few days. Doctor prescribed Cipro. It has taken a bit of the edge off.
However, my teeth, cheeks and eye sockets are sore.
Does anyone have suggestions?

When I was a kid I had a lot of illness. Since I was a block head, my mom would make steam and have me breath it, sometimes she would make a tent over my bed and run steam in there.

Probably wouldn't work for anyone else, but I began early having my block head steamed.

steam, steam with Vicks, a long hot shower or those heated sinus masks.

I had a constant sinus infection for over 2 years until I finally found a doctor that took an X-Ray, referred me to an ENT and I had surgery. One whole side of my sinuses were totally occluded AFTER 9 weeks of antibiotics including Cipro.

Worked for me, but I have always had sinus/alleries. I am also now on allergy shots, no sinus medicine!!

Good Luck!!

2 words....E-myecin...I think that's how you spell it, if it is diagnosed as a sinus infection...I used to get a sinus infection every year...bad hay fever all my life...and camping at 10K ft. in Co. it was killer...this always took care of it for me..Flonase takes care of it so I don't get one anymore...Doug

Did they take a culture to determine which antibiotic is the most effective. My wife has chronic sinusitis (have had 5 sinus surgeries number 6 will probably be this year) her ENT is really good and takes a culure everytime she has a sinus infection. Cipro is a pretty strong antibiotic and is focused for the Sinus and Skin infections from cuts ,etc. The pain/pressure you might be feeling is from the healing in the sinuses. If you can get one of those gel masks you can microwave it and apply heat over your sinuses that should help

If the pain is from being all plugged up you might need to deal with the mucus while the antibiotic deals with the infection. To thin it out try something with Guaifenesin (Mucinex or any cough syrup that says it has an expectorant) to let it drain. You'd be a snot faucet for a few days but it might relieve the pressure.

Sparks--another long time sinus sufferer here. I take a claritin (loratadine) generic every day (one in the morning) as maintenance for allergies. It is non drowsy--I've never had any side effects at all. But what I find effective is also daily use of 4-Way Saline nasal spray. I has Eucalyptus and Menthol to help open up the sinuses. Since it is mostly saline, you can use it as often as you need for relief--it's not addictive. My yearly struggles with sinus infections and bronchitis have been greatly lessened with these two over the counter meds.

Start on the saline spray asap! That's my advice. Gotta get rid of those sinus headaches so you can make room for the tax season headaches! I'm already desperately behind.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

If you're not totally plugged, try a saline irrigation like this http://www.neilmed.com/. This type of thing does a great job at removing the crud. Also alot easier than the water pic gizmo my dr prescribed after sinus surgery.

Cipro?

That's the stuff that Bayer makes for Anthrax exposure.
Here we go again!

This is the best remedy in my opinion and my ENT doctor. Do a nasal lavage in the morning and your sinuses will feel turbo charged. It's also great for cold sufferers. ;) Danny

My wife will agree with you Danny. She suffered infections all winter and hay fever all summer for about 10 years. took every drug known to do any good at all ( most didn't) then her new doctor recommended she try saline irrigation as a last resort ...... she hasn't had a problem in 3 years . Some times the easiest solution is the one least tried.

Here is what my doc had me do:

In 1/3 cup of water melt 1/2 teaspoon of salt -- DO NOT BOIL
Hang head over back of chair with towel around neck
Using drinking straw and thumb, "pipet" the hot salt water up the nose,
about 1/2 teaspoonful at a time, alternating nostrils, until you have used it all.

You will think you're going to drown.
You will think your sinuses are going to detach and run out your ears.
You will feel lots better for up to four hours at a stretch...

I 'graduated' a few years later after a different doc applied a more, um, forceful method. Now I do this with drugstore-strength hydrogen peroxide.
(No salt, and at room temp)It burns. It fizzes. It makes me want to barf. It works.
I feel much better all day.

If you have a toothache with your sinus problems you need to let your doctor know this.
It may be a sign of an infection in the tissues around the roots of the teeth, which means the Cipro isn't getting rid of the sinus infection.

Yes, what Laredo said.

I knew a guy that had a sinus infection abscess into hiS brain and he died.

STARTED WITH A TOOTHACHE!!!

Also, it is possible for a tooth infection to go to your sinuses. If you ever have a tooth pulled and hear a wind sound you cannot account for, have it checked that the hole did not go into the sinuses. They are very close together!!!

When I was a kid, I has my sinuses washed out with warm salt water all the time...loosened up everything enough to blow it out....gross but worked. I had very bad allergies as a kid....lots worse than now.

Hope you find a solution that works for you!!!
