Question on Half Torsion Axles

And what I was wondering is.... Are these Half Torsion Axles any good? have you used them and are these the adjustable height kind?

The starting angle should be at 0 degrees correct?

I was thinking of ordering some of these since the shipping is lighter than a normal axle???????

Im specifically looking for ones that I can adjust the height... or on these is such even necessary?

Had to ask since I be a rookie at this ...

I just ordered a pair and the website indicates that 1400 lb to 3500 lb are adjustable - whatever that means.

I"ll have hands on experience before long. Isn't that exciting!!

I would really have preferred Dexter but after about half dozen emails I just gave up. We obviously didn't speak the same language.

I haven't used any axles yet, but looking at the pictures of these on their website it does appear that the 1400-3500# ones are adjustable(look at the bolt)

There is a redeeming quality to Dexter - they have a few application notes which might answer some of your questions.

That's my best guess. I would be surprised if the shaft and arm are not splined.

With the torsion axle I have, it is a little harder than that. You have to remove the bolt, take the arm off the spline of the torsion unit, turn it to the angle you want, install it on the spline, and install/tighten the bolt. Additionally, mine are such a tight fit on the spline, that I have to drive a wedge (screwdriver) into the slot to get them off and on the spline.

I assumed they WOULD be splined. A gear puller would most likely be helpful to get them off the spline.

It's referring to the start angle on the splines being adjustable, as discussed above.

Flexiride also make 550lb and 935lb capacity (per pair) half axles, but these they describe as British style and they are not adjustable for angle. Here's a photo:

I am using Flex ride 1/2 torsion axles. I was looking at various places to buy them and in the end I called the number at this web site. http://www.ucfamerica.com/flexride.html I was looking for a local dealer and they said their was none and I would have to buy from them. I thought ETrailer was a bit too high and wanted to save shipping. I was right, I paid $174.39 plus $18.79 shipping to WI. Quite a bit cheaper than ETrailer. I don't remember what the shipping weight was, but since my axles were in one package and came UPS, it must have been less than the 70 lbs limit. I got the 1400 lbs axles w/ 5lug 4.5 spacing. They are adjustable which I thought was important so I did not have to predetermine the ride height and start angle. I got the half axles also I did not have to predetermine the width of the axle.

I'm "fixin'" to go buy my 2 1/2" square tube and 2x2x1/8 angle. Here's a pic of my "idea"

DON'T LAUGH "Fixin'" is a good southern word. We use it as a noun, verb and adverb. I'm sure it can be used as an adjective also.

The 2x2's represent the tubing and angle. The angle will be bolted through the middle bolt on the axle.
The tubing and angle will be bolted to the floor at appropriate places.

Looks fine to me. A couple of comments:

- The 2.5" square tube will be more than 7 times as strong as each 2" angle, so the angle won't add much vertical strength. The angle seems to stop only a very short distance in front of the trailer floor, so it also won't add much horizontal strength.

- I'm not a big fan of these composite tongues (ie, central tube and angled braces) as one or other of the parts isn't doing much good. You could throw away the centre tube and just use stronger tubes for the angled braces.
