Kevin, if her and Mike are lucky, only their internet connection is down. Eastern and Central Oklahoma got about 2" of ice and Southwest and central Missouri got the same. Some have been without power since Friday. Oklahomajewel, jplock, Nic and Miriam are right in the wheelhouse for this one. Might be awhile before you hear from them. I went through an ice storm in 1984 and was out of power for 1 week. Longest week of my life and I was only 14.

This past weekend, I only got about and inch of sleet and was happy to only get THAT!!! I'll take snow over ice any day of the week.

I suspect once she gets either power or broadband back up, we'll see her again.

Here's an article on Springfield, MO, and she's not that far from there...

Mike...

P.S. I wonder if anyone is using their teardrop to weather the storm??? :?

Thousands Shiver As Storm Toll Hits 51
By MARCUS KABEL, Associated Press Writer
Tue Jan 16, 11:09 PM

BUFFALO, Mo. - Shoppers were reduced to picking up supplies by flashlight Tuesday in the few places open in this town of 2,800, as the death toll from a winter storm grew to 51 in nine states.

Three shelters in Buffalo _ about 35 miles north of Springfield in hard-hit Missouri _ housed nearly a tenth of its population Monday night, and officials said power might not be restored until next week.

The town lost all its power by Saturday. Water towers ran dry Sunday, and water service was restored only late Monday, after the National Guard hooked a generator up to a pumping station.

"There are no services," Buffalo Mayor Jerry Hardesty said. "I've talked to residents who have lived here 50 years, and nobody can remember it ever being this bad."

About 450,000 homes and businesses in several states were still without electricity Tuesday after a storm that brought ice, snow, flooding and high winds to a swath of the country from Texas to Maine.

The storm had largely blown out of New England by Tuesday, but forecasters expected more freezing rain to hit parts of Texas, perhaps even Houston, on Wednesday night, said Dennis Cook of the National Weather Service. Gusty winds were forecast to make the Northeast bone-chilling cold through Wednesday night before warming Thursday.

At the First Baptist Church in McAlester, Okla., where most of the city's 18,000 residents have lacked power for four days, 47 residents huddled under blankets and in front of space heaters.

"If it wasn't for the shelter, I don't know where we'd be," said Tara Guzman, 38, playing board games with her four children. "We're tough; we lasted when the power went out until (Monday). We brought mattresses out in the living room and cuddled."

Subfreezing temperatures were expected to continue in the state, with little sunshine to aid in melting the ice until Thursday or Friday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Brown.

Some of the 92,000 Oklahoma homes and businesses without power might not have it restored until next week, utility company spokesman said.

"There are a lot of places where virtually everything is destroyed," Public Service Company of Oklahoma spokesman Stan Whiteford said. "In some cases, entire electric services will have to be rebuilt."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry moved his inauguration ceremony indoors for the first time in five decades.

In Missouri, the utility company Ameren said it would probably not have everyone's lights back on until Wednesday night. As of Tuesday, about 210,000 homes and businesses still had no electricity.

The White House said Tuesday that 34 Missouri counties and St. Louis had been declared a major disaster area, making federal funding available. A similar federal disaster declaration was approved Sunday for Oklahoma.

More than 200,000 customers in Michigan also lost power at some point, and tens of thousands were still blacked out Tuesday. Many customers were also without power in central and western New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Waves of freezing rain, sleet and snow since Friday had been blamed for at least 17 deaths in Oklahoma, nine in Missouri, eight in Iowa, four in New York, five in Texas, three in Michigan, three in Arkansas, and one each in Maine and Indiana.

Elsewhere, Washington state's Puget Sound area, known for drizzle rather than its recent freezing weather, was hit by another round of snow Tuesday, snarling traffic and closing schools for more than 380,000 students. The Oregon Legislature delayed hearings and sessions until afternoon because of the weather.

In California, three nights of freezing weather had destroyed up to three-quarters of the state's $1 billion citrus crop, according to an estimate issued Monday. Other crops, including avocados and strawberries, also suffered damage.

"This is one of those freezes that, unfortunately, we'll all remember," said A.G. Kawamura, secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Golly!! I had no idea there was an ice storm.... :o It was cold and rainy here yesterday. All that means to me is, no TD building.

I do try to avoid the news as much as possible, it's always bad anyway.

Aunti M, I hope all is well!!!

:D I'm backkkkk. Thank you so much for your concern. We made it thrugh almost exactly 5 days of no electricity. We are on the bottom of everyone's list. Our mayor and city council finally raised enough H for us to make the paper.

We live in a house with a fireplace and have a wonderful kerosene heater. I highly recomend them.

We live in the Village of Duquesne just East of Joplin and got about 4 inches of ice/sleet. Our power went out just as I PMed Gary, (hope they are ok) and Heikki. It was never an if but a when.
Just a few hundred yards South and East of us is much worse. We got mostly sleet and to the East they got a great deal of rain inspite of the 25 degrees. It is a mess and I will post some pictures as soon as I get them small enough. Right now I need to pick up a rental car. Seems I should have stayed home one more day.

Had a huge chunck of ice slide off a roof and totaled my old but loved Nissan.

I hope everyone else is surviving.

Danny the big stick got here and it made a really bad day so much better.
Thank you all.

So sorry to hear about your car--and five days without electricity! Wow. Very glad to hear you are all okay, though.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

If you could have prepared your teardrop for 5 days of no electricity... would you do anything different than you are doing now?

 Put the hatch on.  The garage stayed warm enough to allow the stuff in the refridgerator feezer to thaw. I think if the windows and hatch had been on it would have been warm enough to be comfortable. Now a propane furnace and lots of air freshener for real comfort. 8)
We never planned to leave the house, because it was cold enough to freeze the water pipes. We did have places for the kids and baby to go if we couldn't get firewood. We did make plans to enclose the Teardrop if one of our trees came down on the house. Lots of plastic (which I keep) and quilts/sleeping bags. ;)

Tough OL gals rule.

Ok boring pictures of mean ice.

This is what it looks like coming into our neighborhood. It actually looks worse now because the tree trimmers are on Uncle Sams dollar and litterally trimmed every tree near a power line back.
Image

This is the side of our yard. Our yard actuall had very few limbs down. We cut some to keep them from hitting the power line and costing us a couple of thousand dollars. (ya know those elbows that take your power to your house---there are none in Joplin)

Image

I have some great pictures on my camera phone of my covered car but haven't gotten to Sprint to change the plan so they come off. This is my car at the body shop awaiting it's fate.

For all the drama, draining nights and totally boring days, we were very fortunate and are greatful to back in the 21st century where I can chat away.

Some things I learned:

The 13 step program is a farce and there is no cure. Get heat in the garage.

The 21st Century without power is very noisy because 3 of my closest neighbors ran out and got the last generators and switches.

The radio is ungodly boring. Day in and day out the Country music channels played the same songs over and over. The soft rock channels live in a different era than I do. Buy own music and battery powered something to play it on.

The baby, now 10 months thinks Alan Jackson rocks and trys to sing to every song.

The computer don't work when the power is out. :x No sitting up all night and reading all the fun and interesting and boring stuff.

Doug is long past me in posts. 8) but still hasn't made #5.
Gage is really a sweetheart in disguise.

Danny makes the most fantastic back scratcher on the planet. Yes it got here. I got it as I was understanding my car was never going to be fixed and burst into tear because someone made something so beautiful.

Aunti M is so sentimental she needs her own hanky. I spent the majority of the week wondering if the rest of you were making it. I knew people East and South were much worse off and still would love to know if everyone is ok.

That means you too Trudy and Gary ;)

I would love to hear from all the Newbies in the Ozarks. I know a lot of them are out of power and may not be on for a while. Please let us know you are ok. :)
