Russian Jet

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Russian Jet

Postby halfdome, Danny » Wed Jan 17, 2007 6:36 pm

This is a video of an in-flight demonstration flown by the Russian SU-30MK fighter aircraft. You'll not believe what you are about to see.

The fighter can stall from high speed, stopping in less than a second. Then it demonstrates an ability to descend tail first without causing a compressor stall. It can also recover from a flat spin in less than a minute. These capabilities probably don't exist in any other aircraft in the world today.

Take a look at the video with the sound up:

This aircraft must be of concern to U.S. And NATO planners. I don't know which nations are flying the SU-30MK, but I hope China isn't one of them.

Amazing.......if you ever get to watch th F-22 Raptor it does some amazing things as well. Dog fighting could take on a whole new meaning.

The thing is unreal!!! Certainly puts a new perspective on things.
You gotta wonder how nervous that pilot was each time he pulled one of those maneuvers, just waitin to see if what they said it should do in theory would actually work in practice.

Gives ya an idea why Russia is broke tho. That was an expensive endeavor.

My money's still on the Raptor. As far as China is concerned, I hear they can't reach the pedals anyway

fly-by-wire and thrust vectoring has given fighters a whole new dimension of flight control.

That is one amazing jet, or else one dumb pilot who doesn't know how to fly straight--kind of like me trying to play video games!
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

HOLY CRAP!!!

But as someone who knows nothing about this stuff, nowadays, don't planes get fired on by other planes that are miles and miles away?

So does this maneuvarability mean you can avoid those missiles?
Here we go again!

That whole demo is to impress and sell planes... and is exciting to watch.

yes, it might have worked 30 years ago in a dog fight, but now, they are likely never to see the plane they are shooting at, or is shooting/firing missles at them....

Actually, can almost take 'shooting at' out of the equation... 99% of the time, they will be 'firing' missles. That jet can do all the fancy stuff it wants to, but a missle will still put one up its butt....

Here is another non-real world example of how to sell airplanes.. and it worked... they bought, but no buyer ever needed the ability, nor did it with their own plane.

Wow! I'm fairly convinced I saw the canards rotate 360 degrees during one manoeuvre - they certainly go past 90 degrees.

I would have thought those were manoeuvres that no missile can duplicate - do those just before the missile impact and it will go right by you - though how you know you've got to 'just before impact' I don't know.

Underestimating the skill of Russian aerodynamicists is never a good idea!

Andrew, I watched the cannards do some wild rotations as well...I guess, the limiting factor to fighter performance is whatever the pilot can withstand, G force wise....as far as dogfights go, most air engagements occur at miles out but as the Phantoms learned in Vietnam, there is no substitute for a gun and dogfighting skills when it comes to a close encounter of the lethal kind....

It was a big deal when the Sukhoi (Su-37) did the "Cobra Maneuver" but that is nothing compared to this stuff. Those tail slides are just crazy.

8) As a former Lockheed Martin employee, I occasionally get company released videos from ex co-workers. I recently watched the JSF (X-35) takeoff VSTOL, accelerate above mach 1, and then land vertically. If I can get it sent again I'll tryand link it.
