That Chevy 6 cylinder was around for a lot of years indeed.

Since you folks are in the Land of 235,s and a million other goodies

Would you consider them good engines? for a normal durable - solid engine for an oldie?

I am quoting this from memory so… before 1953 the 235 had no oil pump, so I would avoid them. 1954 up to 1962 were good dependable motors. The 1962 are a little different in that it had hydraulic lifters, much nicer for a daily driver. In 1963 the 235 was replaced by a 250. I had a 53 truck with a 1962 235 motor that I dove from 1979 – 1990.

Heikki... I think Dhazard knows more than I do about the 235's... All I had were great long service engines. Only trouble I ever had was the side cover gaskets leaking oil. I had 3 or 4 PU's that had chevy 6's.

I want to see a video of how the rear quarter windows roll up and down. I think they must pivot on a point well back under the side of the rear screen, but it's gonna bug me 'till I know..... :x

The 235 was a good engine but the later 250 and 292 were better, due mainly to the hydraulic lifters. The 292 was only available in trucks but will bolt directly in place of the 235 or any other Chevy/GMC inline 6 (including the old oil-pumpless 216). If you really like inline sixes you could try to find one of the mid- to late-sixties Pontiac OHC engines with a Quadrajet - they had torque that you wouldn't believe!

Look carefully at the picture and you will not that the top edge of the rear window is visible and canted toward the front of the car. The pivot point, if memory serves, was approximately at the middle of the window. It looked cool, but you couldn't roll the rear window down with the front window up.

I don't know about that specific car, but it should be about the same as other cars I have worked on. The 1/4 glass window would start to go down at a rearward down angle then pivot around downward. I am not sure I explained that clearly. basically what I am saying is as the glass goes down it pivot. Also you can open the 1/4 glass window with the front window up.

I was helping a friend with a 1950 Chevy Deluxe today and found out that the car 235 with a hydromatic transmission had hydraulic lifters from about 1949. In 1962 hydraulic lifters made it to the truck motors.
