Rocky...you want to use spot putty on any small scratches..it can be applied over primer, it's basically thick primer, bondo is what builds up/fills the surface to get you to the point that you have the scratches, primer will take care of a lot of the scratches after that...if not, after sanding, then the spot putty, and I shoot a sealer coat over that prior to paint..others experience may vary....Doug

Doug,

There's a secret trick to repairing epoxy boats with polyester gel coats, which is to skim a fresh (ie, one day old) epoxy repair with body filler before painting or spraying the new gel coat over the top. As these repairs have stayed stuck to the decks of racing boats, you can be fairly sure there isn't an adhesion problem, although the filler thickness is minimal.

But really, why not use epoxy? If you mix your own filler powders using a high proportion of ultralight filler, it's no harder than body filler to sand and you know the adhesion is as good as you can get. The only downside is waiting for the epoxy to cure hard before sanding - one area where body filler has it beat.

I agree Andrew...I was wanting to get all the body work done on a weekend and minimize the mess by doing it outside rather than stringing it out over a long period of time. I also wonder about the cost of doing it in epoxy vs bondo...I need to calculate what every pump on the resin/catalysts cans cost. that might be interesting to know.`10 pumps of each plus filler does go a long way however.
