How is Music Added To Website

Postby Classic Finn » Sun Jan 21, 2007 8:08 pm

Just wondering as to how to go about adding Music onto a Website (Our Own).. :thinking: and how to go about choosing the music to it.

Thanks

I often use mid music which is easily embedded. You have to included some java to prevent buggy IE from complaining about active-x and such. Here is a sample, just insert this code at the bottom of your page...

Code: Select all
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!--
if(navigator.userAgent.indexOf("MSIE") != -1)
   document.writeln ('');
else
   document.writeln ('<EMBED SRC="midi/breezin.mid" AUTOSTART="true" HIDDEN="true">');
//-->
</SCRIPT>
<BGSOUND SRC="midi/breezin.mid">

As you can see here I have all my midi music in the midi subdirectory. Just substitute the 'midi/breezin.mid' with whatever midi file you use.

Midi files are very small and load easily. You can get fancier with shockwave if you like.

Sample from the home page of the Fish Creek Pond TearUp...
http://tearuptheadk.com/

Just google 'midi music' or 'midi files' to find some sources for the type of music you like. As far as choosing music... just pick something that sounds great! :roll:

Your welcome.

One thing with mid files and Firefox... well any mozilla browser that I have used... you have to be sure to go into quicktime and set the mime types to include midi, or the music won't play. Not overly complex, but they sure make it difficult for none computer types to configure... since you have to install the quicktime plug and go configure it.

Personally I dislike Firefox and all its fuzzyness, and usually avoid it.

Yep, Dave said it all. That's about the way I do it. :thumbsup: My problem is, I've got some good and some not so good. I've been known to spend a few hours looking for good midi music (for free).

Heikki...keep in mind, that many people find music to be beyond annoying onna website...if I can't easily stop the music, I usually just exit the site without going any further...one persons music is anothers excruciating annoyance...when I want to hear music, I choose something of my own to play.....

Heikki... Even elevator music is annoying to some people... and I'd just as soon not have the music I'm currently listening to interruped by some website, for example... So, my suggestion is to have an easy way to turn OFF the music at the top of your first page. :thumbsup:

My preference is to have a button or link that I can press to play the music. While at work for example I'd never press that button. (I can not visit Gage's page from work for example).

If I go to a webpage that starts playing music (while at work) I quickly exit the browser... so you see, music can be unwanted at times.

I can't agree with you there, madjack - I think pretty much every other persons music is an excruciating annoyance.....

Nothing worse than opening six different links to look at them in turn, and not being able to work out which one of them is making that awful noise.

To be fair, I've seen a few YouTube vids with really excellent, appropriate music choices. Which definitively proves that I'm not an old fart. Oh no, not me....

Exactly, Heikki:

Whoever does the studies for these kinds of things all agree:

Music is a nuisance that distracts from the site--it doesn't add anything.

It's particularly annoying when you have OTHER audio playing already, like me--who always listen to satellite radio via the computer. Others listen to iTunes and other web radio services.

I'm the same way, if I visit a web site that has music I exit out right then. I don't want to hear music coming out of my computer, that's just me.

Is music annoying?

Heck has anyone been to one of our old sites from back in about 2000,
Dave 'n Kate's New Deck and Spa site? I created this site for our deck design... naturally had to look and 'sound' natural.

Be sure to page through all the photos. 8)

I didn't visit, and even if if the music is great and you think it's adorable, it's still a no-no for sites.

BUT...

If you give someone your URL and that person visits for the specific purposes of learning about a particular company, then MAYBE. But for surfers, 90% will exit.

So why even do it? No one misses NOT hearing the music.

And if the person spends 2o minutes on a page, it will 100 PERCENT be annoying.

Funny, but every time that I go to a site with music, I just hit the 'STOP' button on my browser and the music stops!! Seems pretty simple to me.
