Home from the hospital...!!!!!

Postby Larwyn » Wed Jan 24, 2007 7:21 pm

Went to work Monday morning, felt a little chest pain. Finally got home a few hours ago (3 days later), with two stints. I did not enjoy my stay at the hospital but was well taken care of. Hard to believe that a person can be home so soon after such serious life saving surgery. No, I did not know I had heart problems, or diabetes, or high blood pressure. Life seems so much simpler when you can live in ignorance of such ailments.....

Havn't met ya yet. My advice is hang in there and don't quit. >When ya got a list of issues like that its best to consider them but don't let em rule yer life. My build is a little slow but i'm gettin their. Docs said retire but i'm still workin at least part time. By your avatar i'm guessin ya got some Scots in ya so from one to another live yer life maybe a little more precious than before but keep livin it. Best wishes for a speedy recovery

Thaks everyone for your support.

Actually I feel that getting all this health stuff under control will improve my situation. Not knowing about them did not keep them from getting in the way of my progress.....

Working with obstructed arteries, high blood sugar, high colestorl/triglicerides, high blood pressure, etc did not seem to bother me that much, (except for the recent heart attack) but if getting all that stuff a "little less high" makes me feel better then I should really be able to get some stuff done....!!!

Of course looking over the diets tends to make me wonder if it might not be better to suffer a bit from some of these ailments rather than to starve to death in thier "honor"..........

Hey Larwyn buddy... Glad ya survived your wake up call! Happens to a lot of us about middle age. Me, about 4 years ago as well. The lifestyle changes are not that hard to live with. And, you're right, the diet changes are the hardest to stick with. But, it sure beats the alternative!

Best of luck my friend... You're not alone.

I was diagnosed with diabetes about 10 years ago. Here are a couple of things to think about. Some doctors don't take type 2 diabetes as seriously as they should. I had one that was saying that my A1C was okay at 8.0. At the very least it should be under 7.0. The doctor that I have now has told me that the max the A1C is recommended is likely to go down at some point. He wants me under 6.5. Under 6.0 is normal.

You might want to ask you doctor to check your free testosterone. Fourty percent of all male diabetics and 50% of male diabetics over forty will have low free testosterone. Just to stall of bad jokes, having low free testosterone affects more then your sex drive. If it's low you'll be tired, gain fat, loose muscle mass and be irritable. When mine was low I was falling asleep everywhere and my kids were afraid to say anything to me as I had a tendency to get mad at every little thing. Since I've gotten it under control I've got more energy, my mood is more stable and I've lost 20-30 lbs in the last year.

Ask you doctor about Byetta. It can help you loose weight but it does have to be injected each time. It's taken twice a day.

A study from Europe a few years ago said that newly diagnosed diabetics have better control after a year if they start taking Lantus instead of pills. Lantus is a type of insulin that has to be injected.

There is an inhaled insulin also. I'm not sure where they are at with testing that. The last I heard is that they weren't sure of it's long term effects on the lungs and it couldn't get exact doses correct.

Good lord, neighbor ... that was a close call.

Here's something that'll help with the diabetes: (Yeah, I've been doing this about five years now) -- Splenda is your friend.

If you can stand the taste  oatmeal is your friend too.
