New Camping Buddy

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Kurt,
Your camping buddy looks alot like out Westie. She goes crazy too when other animals are around. I would be afraid to take her camping, she's a bit yappy.

Giant Schnauzer ??? I've known several Schnauzer owners, but never heard of a Giant Schnauzer. Sounds interesting, how big do they get? Any pics?

Curiosity got the best of me, I found this photo of a giant schnauzer here. http://www.magnagiantschnauzers.com

Junkman, the AKC registers Giants and Standards in the Working Group, and Miniatures in the Terrier group. Giants go between 25 1/2" - 27 1/2" at the withers (shoulder) for males, and 23 1/2" - 25 1/2" for the girls--the goal is the middle of the range. A Giant Schnauzer is comparable in height to an Irish or Gordon setter, although in body they'll be bigger boned than the Irish and about equal to the Gordon. A local woman has a five year old Giant boy, and when Otis stands up on his hind legs, he can put his forelegs on my shoulders and look me in the eye--but I'm only five feet tall. ;) Standard Schnauzers are 18 1/2" to 19 1/2" for males, 17 1/2" to 18 1/2" for females, or about the same size as an English springer spaniel.

Casey's bestest girlfriend in the whole world is a 2 y.o. champion Standard girl who loves to push him around...he's pretty tolerant with girls, so he let's her get away with murder.

Miniature Schnauzers have to be between 12-14" at the shoulder to qualify to be shown, although taller (and smaller) minis happen all the time. All sizes can come in black (like the picture...nice dog, btw) or salt-and-pepper (silver/grey). Around here, black Giants are most common, but Standards and Miniatures are usually salt and pepper. I love 'em all, but Giants can be real clowns, and Standards can be real pushy.

Kevin,
That is a great picture of a adult giant schnauzer.

Bill " the nut" will be putting a picture of our Gina on the website for us. We picked this breed because they don't shed, and because they are good family dogs when they are "socialized "as puppies. So far Gina is a real sweetheart.
Thanks,
Italia

Gaelen,

That's a neat looking breed, don't think I have ever seen one before. I really like the fact that they don't shed!

While we have gone to the dog shows, and watched them on TV, I guess that we only paid attention to breeds that we were familiar with, or that caught our attention. Of course with the sheer number of dogs at the shows, unless you stayed there the entire time, you would never get to see all of the breeds, and unfortunatly we usualy just spend a couple of hours at the shows.

We originally thought about showing our Jack Russells, but that was before the AKC recognised them. The JTRCA had a couple of meets in our area, so we took our dogs to one, but realised real quickly that we didn't have enough time (or patience) to train them well enough to be competitive.

I have been thinking about building an agility course in the back yard just for fun.

Kerry and Earl,

The best of luck with Ranger.......................

I was away for 13 days and got home at midnight last night and my little cowgirl was soooo excited to see me. She's like a velcro dog today.

The pic below is from the summer as my cowgirl Ocoee seems to be approving of the Life is Good theme for the teardrop.

That's a cute little camping buddy - Jack Russels are very cute. My dog, Spike, loves to camp. Right now it's in a tent, but I'm sure he can take up most of the room in a teardrop, when I have one!

oh my, they're all cute...and Gina looks like she'll be a fine example of a Giant.

Junkman, my parents have never been to a dog show (although I've been showing and training dogs for 25+ years!) But now that they have dog shows on TV, they recognize a lot more breeds. ;) I used to manage a boarding/grooming/training kennel and I taught classes for 20 years, so I've had around 120+ breeds on my table or on the end of my leash, and there are very few that don't interest me...although many that I've realized I would never own!

I have agility equipment...but it all has to fit in my deck box on my condo. Amazing what you can build and put together in a small space...right now we have a snowbank weave pole chute outside so that Madison can practice weaves, but we do most of the other stuff indoors in the living room or go to a barn for practice and classes. I will never have the room or patience to own full sized contact obstacles like a dog walk or A-frame.
