I'm not going to question the motives behind trying to save the horse, and some of it has to do with simply advancing the science of equine medicine, but I don't understand the "premiums grew" reference above. What does that have to do it?

Seriously, does that make any sense? Yeah, the premiums grew because the horse's insured value went up...

But I'm curious as to what the actual dollar numbers are. A sought-after stud gets HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS for a few minutes of ecstacy. Considering the lifespan of a horse and how many times he can sire, would an insurance payment come CLOSE to that?

Also, did they "milk" him at all during the recovery? Maybe this has something to do with it as well, with his sperm sitting in some freezer.

By the way:

I worked at Belmont when Ruffian injured herself in the match race against Foolish Player. It was the most frightening thing to witness, and she was euthanized later that day. They buried her in the infield at Belmont, with her nose pointing toward the finish line.

On a happier note, this is quite impressive to watch:

You may have heard about the herd of horses that were trapped for 3 days on a tiny piece of land in wind and rain in the Netherlands. They were trapped on a small piece of land, surrounded by water. Their natural instincts kept them from swimming to solid land, from their tiny perch. There were about 100 horses huddled together against the wind and water. The Nation was mesmerized watching this drama as 18 of the horses perished, while others were slowly weakening.

First the fire department, then the Dutch army, tried to rescue them - both efforts were unsuccessful. Then, with a break in the weather, the water level went down and four women hatched a plan to attempt a rescue by luring the horses into the water.

Here's a video of the successful rescue. I was very touched as I watched the video of these magnificent animals being saved. I hope you enjoy this video too.

I used to take horses that didn't know squat, get my heels into them, and they crossed rivers.

Horses do not normally choose to swim... those you mention are herded into the water.... and actually, most are brought over by barge now.. a few are brought by water for the tourists.... yippie, kyie..!

If they did it by choice, there would be no horses left on the island... they would go where there was better foraging.

Realisitcally, don't you think if horses liked to swim they would stay on that tiny island in the Netherlands/Holland by choice.?

Come to think of it, being smarter, would you try to swim that distance in the North Sea? It may look simple, but having once almost drowned myself in a flood, I can tell you that the power of water is not to be messed with.

When I was being swept downstream in flood water, it was a very helpless feeling.....
