Windoze Vista Upgrade???

Postby Podunkfla » Thu Feb 01, 2007 12:49 am

OK folks...

Am I missing something here? Or is Microsoft doing business as usual? :(
I bought an Acer 3690 notebook that came loaded with Vista Home Basic. I have read that the upgrade to Windows Home Premium would be discounted 50% to buyers like me? Not so it seems so far in my quest??? Microsoft had to know there would be thousands of us wanting to buy this upgrade. Yet I have not been able to find ANY information about how to do this??? All I can find is the full upgrade from XP, etc... about $150. or so. :o

So far it looks like I could load my legal (but never used) XP Pro onto the new Acer and buy a Vista upgrade for less money... :x

Anyone know more about this?

thanks, friend ~ Brick

My suggestion, don't upgrade. I did it about a month ago on one of my boxes, didn't fair well. The full version of Vista even says it is best to do a full new install.
Personally I think it sucked, it's a serious memory and hardware hog and I didn't find much I liked better than XP.
Oh yeah, it ain't gonna be cheap.

I'm staying away from it for at least a year or so. In the mean time, I maxed out what my motherboard can handle. I won't have to build a new computer for a little while.

Everything I've read so far says that Vista isn't worth it.

Yep... I'm beginning to think the same way. I don't even like the cutsie new pastel colors of the new OS anyway. And, I a wanna get cute I can use something like Window Shades to make my GUI as wierd as I want to.

I just needed a new little laptop cause my old one's battery is kaput and it's dang slow a 750mhz, no built in wireless... Plus a new one I could use in the Tear as a TV with a tuner card, play videos, listen to the 80+ gigs of music I have... etc, etc, etc...

OK, He!!... I just wanted a new toy... he he heh. :R

Naaa... Steve. I don't think so...

Fer way less than 7 G's I could build me a nice little Hot-Rod mini PC and hook it up to my 21 in. flatscreen with a handy little remote...

Hey! That's not a half bad idea! ;)

anything as complex as vista will always have teething problems... I don't buy a new model of a car the first year, and I'll let you all get the bugs worked out before I update... at least 6 months... oh, I said update... no, what I meant was before I replace my oldest computer (which is getting a bit overloaded)....

Get Ubuntu Linux or SimplyMepis Linux instead. No DRM, no security problems, no adware, no spyware, and every application you could ever think of using. All for free. And a free download from the Internet.

If you want to see where all that fancy Vista eye candy came from, check out OS/X and Linux. All that Vista stuff is up to 5 years old and straight out of those O/Ses.

Every computer I have (10! I develop software) runs Linux instead of Windoze. Including the notebooks.

"Forgive them Lord--they know not what they do."

FOR GOD'S SAKE! GET A MAC ALREADY!

Any new Intel Mac will also run that crappy Windows which you poor souls have been suffering with for years. With the free Bootcamp software, you can boot up right into Windows.

Or for an extra lousy 80 bucks, you can buy Parallel--which lets you switch between Windows and the Mac OS on the fly. (But once you're in the Mac OS, you're not gonna WANT to go back to that other drek.)

Another thing:

The Mac operating system has always basically been a "freebie"--Apple doesn't really give a crap if someone gives you disks to the newest OS, cause they're making their money on selling the computers. In other words, you don't have to "validate" a Mac OS license. Someone just has to copy the discs for you and you're off and running on the install.

Yeah, Macs are more expensive, but you get what you pay for. However, with the latest Intel Macs able to run both operating systems, it doesn't make sense NOT to get a Mac.
Here we go again!

Ira... Of course I have a Mac too... After all I was a graphic designer for 35 years. Still, for surfing the net, ebay business and a lot of other things, I prefer a Windoze PC. I haven't tried OsX Tiger yet... but I prolly will.

As for Linux... I may do a dual boot on the new lappy with Ubuntu just to try to get up to speed with it.
