Windoze Vista Upgrade???

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby rainjer » Thu Feb 01, 2007 11:46 am

I beta tested Vista Ultimate and loved it. Because I was a beta tester Microsoft is sending me a free copy of Vista Ultimate.

I plan on getting a new 250 gig hard drive & doing a fresh install.

FYI: I am running a P3 1.8ghz Dell with 1 gig ram & the 32mb onboard video card without any issues. I have it installed on an old 40 gig hard drive I had laying around.

I have Win 2000Pro, How would I do this?? And how will this affect my ability to work in stuff originally done in Windows apps?

Ah yes Vista.. I had a good laugh the other day checking out a 'review' of Vista on C|net. See http://reviews.cnet.com/4321-3121_7-6557921.html

But forget all that... here is a summary...

Important new features on Vista include
- new login sound written by veteran rocker 'Robert Frip' !!
- over an hour install time!!
- tablet PC... Cool! You can use your mouse to write text on the screen!! LOL (is this the 80's?)
- spyware and backup utilities!! wow finally after 20 years!
- revamp of the old solitaire and mindsweeper games including performance tools for these games!! (hope they've added 'pong'!)

Oh yah baby... like I'll be running off to the puter store...

I agree on the linux comment... well I use a few other flavours of unix (SCO and Solaris).. definately much smarter o/s and flawless... I mean flawless! Can't remember that last time I had a unix box crash (other than a bad disk)... may the mid 80's?

I have many a unix box running that have been running for a year or more. Even large data apps just fly on the cheapest of PC's these days. Heck they used to fly on the first Pentiums on 256MB for that matter!

Alas my next PC with have a minimum 2GB of memory, quad processors and a few 750GB hard drive... hopefully Vista won't be too slow on that hardware.. poor Microslow...

OK all you Linux guru's. I have been trying to play with Linux for a while and it always seems to frustrate me till it gets shelved.
I am putting together an in house server and I wanted to use Linux for it. It's an old 550Mhz box with 192MB of RAM. I put SUSE 10 in it because it is supposed to do anything and oh my, this just ain't happenin. Drags it down slower than Windows does. Besides the fact that it took 4 hours to load and update. Now I'm gonna scrap that one and try a different version. I just downloaded Ubuntu server release 6.10, but, it says there is no graphic interface. Am I going to be able to set this thing up or can I put the Desktop version on too or do I need to do that anyway?
I haven't figured out the code terminology yet and I think that's what gives me so much trouble. I've seen the cheat sheets but never downloaded on but the little popup thingy you write the code in confuses the hell out of me. Never understood how to make it do anything.
I want this for a website server for writing sights and debugging before uploading so I want it to be as much like my server as possible.

OK let's have it. Anybody want to let the cat out of the bag? What's the secret to this? I keep hearing it's supposed to be easy.

Parallels requires an Intel Mac. Just thought you might like to know.

Steve,

Here's another way to run Windows apps under Linux: http://itrain.org/itinfo/2001/it010530.html

Of course, most versions of Linux come with OpenOffice. OpenOffice is a business suite, like MS Office. You can import all Office docs (except maybe from Office 2007) and you can save your OpenOffice docs, spreadsheets, etc in the MS Office formats.

Just some food for thought!!

If you must run Windows apps, then this is probably the best solution that I know of: http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxoffice/

When you consider that you can get Linux for FREE, then the cost of CrossOver Linux is so small in comparison to the cost of any currently available version of Window!!!

This option allows you to have the security and stability of Linux and still run the MS apps that you are used to!!

The two distros I mentioned have Live CDs that you can optionally install on your hard disk. A Live CD is one you put in your CDROM drive, reboot the system and it loads and runs in memory without touching your hard disk.

You can easily dual boot Windows and Linux, i.e., run both O/Ses on the same computer. Or get something like VMWare (which I don't like) or Parallels (which I use) and create a virtual operating system inside Windows.

Lots of options. It's best if you get a little help on this, unless you have an old machine you are willing to experiment on. For help, try a local Linux User Group.

As for stuff you've done in Windows apps, if you use MS Office, then the Linux equivalent is OpenOffice.org, which can easily read Word, Excel and Powerpoint files.
