Ice Cubes in My Hose

Ice Cubes in My Hose

I had the day off for a change and it was clear and sunny and just above freezing. It made me feel like Spring was on the way. I decided that since there was enough sun in the driveway I would give the Blazer a much needed wash job and while I’m at it I would wash the tear too. I drug out the long garden hose that was delibertly left on the ground to drain. I hooked it up and turned on the water and all I got was one ice cube . For 15 minutes I continually beat on that hose to disloge the ice cubes and just a small trickle would come out. I even drove the Blazer on it with no luck. I glad my neighbors were at work or they may have thought I was having some kind of fit or something. For those of you that have never lived in a freezing climate if you leave a hose connected to the hose bib all nicely rolled up it will freeze the hose and continue into the hose bib and burst the water pipes. That’s from experience, ugh. Anyway I hooked up the tear and drove to the car wash only to find the change machine didn’t like my paper money. I went next door to the 7-11 to get change and watched some dumb ass teen boy pass a phoney $50 bill. The owner told him he wanted his ID so he went to his car to get it an disappeared. He is now on video. Back at the car wash my new folding money didn’t work either so I got desperate and inserted a $20 bill and to my surprise it gave me 24 tokens. From then on it was enjoyable to finally wash the Blazer and tear and I even sold some of my tokens to other patrons. I finished up and drove to Costco for a new 100' flexible garden hose. And you thought this was going to be dirty. Anyone want to buy 12 car wash tokens? :D Danny

  Ok boys, listen up!! Ya gotta hook the iced over hose to the hot water heater and let out a slow trickle. 8)

Course you could put it in the house for a short while and it will thaw itself.

I always shut the water off to the hose bibs, disconnect the hose and lay it out to full length. Then I start at one end lifting the hose above my head and walking the length of the hose lifting as I go. All the water in the hose is emptied this way. Then I coil it up for the winter.

I've probably got 300' of hose laying out there under the snow with close to 200' of water in them. Forgot to drain them this year, not the first time. I figure they'll be thawed by the time I need them around the beginning of June.

When I know there is a freeeze coming I usually disconnect the hose and blow the water out of it with the air compressor. It has proven to be worth the effort at times.

Good idea  . My friend a couple blocks away blows out all his in ground sprinkler lines every fall. Mine are buried deep enough and have automatic drains & a shut off valve 18" below ground level. While at Costco a Korean speaking couple were trying to convince me to sell my teardrop to their relative. I finally told them my wife wouldn't like that so they took my name and phone number for my next one. :D Danny

Frozen hose

Postby prohandyman » Fri Feb 02, 2007 8:47 pm

Danny
I did the same thing once. Then someone told me to hook the frozen hose to the drain connector at the bottom of my hot water heater and turn on the valve. In a couple of minutes I had hot water flowing thru the hose.

I would have done that but my water heater is in my office and was soooo ugly I built a Red Oak enclosure around it to match the wainscot. It's not worth the trouble to remove the enclosure. :) Danny

Danny, do you just realize that you jinxed yourself? By saying what you said, that means your hot water heater will go out and not only will you have to remove the cover, you will have to replace the heater.

Let's hope that you have some good juju to counteract this.

My wish is to have a tankless water heater to free up much needed space in my office, fail away  Danny
