I was involved with stock car racing for over 30 years and a goodly portion of that time I was a member of NASCAR. When Dale died at Daytona, NASCAR was VERY quick to lay the blame somewhere or to use a scapegoat and they chose Bill Simpson stating that his seatbelts were to blame. This caused Bill to leave his beloved company in shame and dispair and it was all unfounded. I'm sorry but Dale Earnhardt was to blame and if he were alive today he tell you the same thing. I lost all faith and trust in NASCAR and promptly mailed my license back to them never to return. Now NASCAR has once again gone well out of their way to punish yet another valued member, Mike Waltrip for infractions he had no control over. Yes, I attempted many times to circumvent the rules, that's the name of the game and yes, I got caught. Nothing I did was intentional more of an oversight than anything but still I pushed the rules. NASCAR works in the black and white world, racers work in a gray world with rules.
Waltrip employs 150-200 people and flat laid down the law in the beginning that he did NOT want any rules broken and that everyone was to do the right thing. Waltrip drives what is handed to him and what people do behind his back he can't control. Okay, there was illegal fuel and some holes drilled in the wrong areas. So what should have been done? The individual(s) responsible should have been fired, black listed and fined and maybe Waltrip should have been fined because he is ultimitely responsible - end of story. Now he has a car taken away from him, $150,000 total in fines and 100 points deducted before the season even starts. That folks, is excessive based on the circumstances - period!
Did the fuel additive help - NO! Did any of the other so called modifications help - NO. Now NASCAR once again flexes it's muscles and pounds Waltrip with something he will never recover from. Michael entertained a very strong urge to just throw his hands up and quit and I don't blame him. NASCAR is only thinking of one thing - the bottom line at the end of the year. What ever they can do to stir the pot to raise controversy is just good for business. Yes rules are in place and they are there for a reason and I respect that however, to beat someone into the ground goes way above and beyond the sport itself. There were alternatives to the Waltrip situation which could have been put into place rather than just jerk a man's dignity and self esteem without recourse.
Just my nickels worth!!!
