I know what you mean. I ended up buying 20 inch heavy duty kart wheels from Gemplers($42 each). My cyclekart will have a Ford model A type body. I just need to save up $$$ for the engine and torque convertor.

I have never heard of cyclecarts, but what a neat idea. Make use of all the crap laying around the garage. Anyone in the FL, GA, SC, NC area planning on casual just for fun racing? I could see a weekend camping trip with the TTT and a lousy homemade cart being a really good time.

ps. you wouldnt want a RACING bmx wheel, as those are the weakest. You'd want a street or urban wheel. Makes no sense I know, but the weird kid at the bike shop will know what you are talking about. If I make a cart, it will be those, as I can get them cheap. Typcially they are around 50 per wheel for lower end ones... but with 48 spokes and a strong rim, they can take a lot.

What about the wheels they use on sulky carts for horse racing.... Would they be strong enough?

althought they would be small, I have one of those 1,000 pound capacity garden wagons, and I can take its wheels. They are only 13" tires I think, but they are funny and really wide and kinda knobby, and best of all, wont cost anything. Id also consider driving both rear wheels, as it would be more for fun anyways.

Which Gempler wheel did you get/ Is front end unsprung and how do you plan on using theat wheel for drive wheel ? Inquiring minds want to know.

I bought Gempler cart tires: 20 X2.125 inch
3/4 inch bearing

No suspension/springs. I will only be "pimp riding" around the neighborhood. No racing.


I will use a live axle "drive shaft" (1 inch axle) connected to a torque converter and 6.5 hp engine. I will weld 1 rear wheel to the live axle and leave 1 wheel free per cyclekart website.

Those wheels should be plenty heavy enough and available to everyone. Too bad they aren't the 17's but what can you do. Think I'll go with those so now I can get started on this. I figure to keep everything else as close to the original concept as I can. It will be fun for taking to the car shows and will fit in PU bed to take with me for running around the camgroind. May make a mini tear to pull behind it.
