Fort Leonard Wood, MO camping?

Postby EZ » Wed Feb 21, 2007 4:19 pm

No no, not Army camping. I KNOW they do that down there. I was thinking of taking the tear and visiting my son who will be finishing basic training around the middle of May. Figured it wouldn't be too hot and a good excuse for a road/tear trip.

After trying Air Force ROTC then quitting college to join the Army my son enlisted in the Army National Guard to be an MP. He is a great kid and is determined that this is his calling. Funny how things can cause your opinions to be modified. Of course I have a nephew in Bagdad and another leaving in 2 weeks for somewhere in Iraq, so I guess the military in general and the war specifically is getting close to home.

Anyway, does anyone know of anywhere to camp in that area?

Ed, Try this out. It is less than 25 miles out. Boiling Springs looks like it might be ok.
Campground

You might also ask if the Fort offers camping or RV spots too. Seems like they might since a lot of visitors go there.

When I find my conservation map I will check it out too. Seems it gets borrowed a lot.

PS Lake of the Ozarks is just North of there so there are some State Parks. We have some members who live in Camdenton.
When will you be there?

Fort "Lost in the Woods", I spent a couple of months and a week there about 36 years ago or so. I was not a happy camper. Here are a few camp grounds, the first one is about 7 miles away from the Fort. When I was there Waynesville had wood sidewalks and they rolled them up at night.

Glen Oaks RV Park
26215 Hwy 17, Waynesville, MO 65583

Knights Inn RV Park
14175 Hwy Z, St. Robert, MO 65584
573-336-3036 or 1-800-843-5644

Roubidoux Springs Campground & RV Park
Historic Route 66, Waynesville, MO 65583

I had no idea you were that OLD! Seriously, you look really young!

Wish him and your nephew all the best from the site here.

Your Son

Postby JFJR55 » Fri Feb 23, 2007 8:11 pm

Please tell your son that my family and I "Thank Him" for his service. My 20 year old son is there too. My wife and I were up there the week of the 9th this month. He is out of boot camp now and still there for more training (6 more weeks) for truck driving. I wished I had my camper built , I would have camped too.

Mark and Pat and JFJR55, thanks you so much for the appreciation and back you on that JFJR55. Some folks I have told that my son has joined the Guard respond "let me talk to him, I'll change his mind" and to that I say "what, you don't want the US to have an Army?".

Thanks for the camping suggestions. I checked out FLW on a map and I see it truly is in the middle of nowhere. It would be a fun trip top see the boy and get somewhere I haven't been before.

Yes Ira, I am afraid that it is true. I have a 13 and 8 year old as well. Late starter (married at 31). I also have a big birthday coming up shortly. In honor of that I stopped cutting my hair 5 months ago and won't for a while as my protest against aging. My now PFC son iformed me over a beer (mine) at the local pub the other evening that I don't act my age. I told him I took that as a compliment and left it at that. He is a good kid and will make a great soldier.

A link for the whole county

Postby Guy » Wed Feb 28, 2007 4:49 pm

Dear Ed,

Here is a link for all of Pulaski County.

Each of the campgrounds have rv space so you are not limited to just rv parks.

Have a great trip. I remember when my father visited at base, it was a special time.
Regards,

Guy
