Linseed Oil Precautions

Postby Sierrajack » Fri Feb 23, 2007 6:45 pm

I don't know if this subject has been brought up before but I want to warn everyone about using linseed oil or boiled linseed oil. If you use any kind of linseed oil or an oil based stain or sealer assume that it contains linseed oil. Please, please, do NOT throw the used rags in the trash or leave them laying around for any period of time. Linseed oil can and will spontaneously combust unpredictably. The Materials Safety Data Sheet recommends that rags or materials soaked with linseed oil be disposed of in a sealed water filled container. I do know of one gentleman who was building a new house and threw the rags in the corner. When he returned to the project the next day, the house was burned to the ground - yes, it can be that fast. :cigar:
