I Scored Some Wood Today

Postby halfdome, Danny » Mon Feb 26, 2007 11:46 pm

A friend of mine who has a molding manufacturing business called me today. After 11 years he is closing his doors for health reasons and availability of capable employees. I bought 55 bdft of 4/4 Red Oak, 15 bdft of Walnut 37 bdft of 5/4 Poplar, and 24 Lin ft of Red Oak crown molding for $123.00. That's less than $1,00 a bdft. Red Oak goes for upwards of $3.35 bdft. I figured I saved about $212. I went back and bought more Red Oak 5/4 & 8/4 & 4/4 Walnut. Everything you see on the top of my table saw came to only $245.00. I'm guessing I saved over $400 today. Now I have plenty of wood for honey-do projects and some of the wood for the next tear. Danny

I've been running most of it through my wide belt sander today so that it will be ready for use. Now I need to stack it all up by the ceiling, no room on the floor and it stays dry up there. One of the pieces of Red Oak was 16" wide and 16 feet long and I had to get it cut in half just to handle it. :) Danny

My wife told me to get all that I wanted even if it was more than I could afford as she would pay the extra. His employee was making a dining table for home so they held some back for that. There is a board of quilted Walnut in the pile and I'll have to think of something special to use it for. Danny

While rearranging my stash of wood I re-discovered some fiddle back Silver Maple from years ago. I'll need that for trim on #2 Galley cabinets. Danny

Great score Danny... you lucky dog! Last good deal I got was on 1500 bf of black cherry for $600. ... but that was 4 years ago. It's crazy, I live in the middle of "oak country" aka: Live Oak, FL and yet the dang stuff is expensive around here?

Brick...the whole deal is when you find good stuff, get it and as much as you can...chances are, you won't find it like that again...at least that's how I think...I had a good distributer in Denver and loaded up on 1/4 sawn white oak before I moved to Calif...glad I did...I got it a whole lot cheaper, and is a lot better than I can find out here...I'm nursing the supply....Doug

I sure agree... That's why a sprang for 1500 feet of cherry. That's a lot of wood! It was prolly a once-ina-lifetime deal too. I have used about 2/3rds of it. Those deals are getting harder to come by...

Years ago while working in a Cabinet shop in Santee CA I got about 2 pick up trucks full of dirty Oak & Ash for free. They had it under tarps outside and it got real dirty so they were cutting it up & banding it in stacks for employee camping fire wood. When they found out I had a planer they gave me what was left. It took several years to go through my free hardwood. A once in a lifetime deal for sure. :) Danny
