I was lucky to find the Kenskill logo that had been on my trailer and pick it up off e-bay. It had been painted over so I cleaned it as much as possible and took it to a shop for an estimate to re-chrome it.


Sadly even if it could be cleaned up more, there is too much corrosion and it will cost a minimum $120 for an okay job.

Does anyone know of a way to have these re-made using the original as a template?

You could try to find a place that does custom castings. They should be able to reproduce it for you. I know some of them use sand to make a mold and then pour metal into the sand mold. You could then have that chromed, but I'm afraid that it will cost just as much!

Dennis, you might try and make a clay mold and poor some lead and go from there. I have no idea of what I'm talking about. It just sounds good.

You might wanna talk to George... He does casting.
I know a little bit, but not much...
They make a wooden frame and fill it with green sand... I think it's called bentonite. The sand is really fine, almost like dust... It's tamped down a bit then a positive model is pressed into the sand bed and removed... leaving a negative mold into which the casting metal is poured.
Like I say, I don't know much, but I'm thinking that something like the KenSkill script would be better reproduced using the lost wax method, with a centrifuge... A carved and shaped hard wax positive is made and placed in plaster, fired in a kiln to make the wax "lost". (The wax would also have "inlets" added, which are cut off and discarded once the piece is cast) The plaster negative is then placed into a centrifuge, metal is poured and the centifuge spun, assuring the mold is completly filled.

Take it to a CNC machine shop and have it milled out of stainless steal.
Stainless steal will polish up like chrome. It will cost a lot to have it done. Or have it cast in brass, then have it chromed. That is probably the cheapest.

Could you have it cast in aluminum and then polished. No chrome.

Keryd...Could you make a couple that spell Slumbercoach.. in the scrpt used by Pontiac back in the sixties? IE Pntiac, Bel-Aire....

The best chromer I know by far is Mike Chiaurro who owns: http://gatewayxtreme.com/ He stays busy just doing Honda VTX owners chrome... He also rides a VTX (like me).

He is prolly at Bikeweek right now (usually at the Rat's Hole bikeshow area)... He is very good and not all that expensive... And, trust me Bike nuts are picky about quality. I have... and have seen a lot of his work.

Dennis, the CNC-cut from stainless sounds like a really good solution - and you get to spend many happy hours polishing the cut edge to perfection. Don't forget the easy way to make the CNC model - put your existing nameplate on a scanner and then draw over the scan. If you want help with that, PM me.

Thanks Andrew; I am seriously out of my depth with this. The piece is on its way to Kerry right now. He will have to figure out how to do it. I am clueless.
But it is nice to have friend who do know what they are doing.
