Decades long search has finally ended

Postby Guy » Tue Mar 06, 2007 8:21 pm

Dear All,

Today I talked to the man who was our corpsman in Vietnam. He was one of the bravest men I ever had the honor to meet. I had not seen nor heard about him since he himself was injured and medevaced out of a battle in 1969.

I and many others have searched, called, googled every person with his common name that we could find over the last few decades and always came up empty handed other than one reported sighting in Santa Cruz in 1974. You cannot imagine how much this has weighed on mind for almost forty years. After all, he was the man you relied on to keep you alive and maybe you let him down. I know the other Marines on this board know what I mean.

Well, on Thursday we are having lunch together since it turns out that he is less than 30 minutes from where I am in LA. Can you believe that!!!!
Regards,

Guy

Guy,
That is so cool. Corpsmen are such unsung heros, it takes a rare individual to do that job. I have never been in the military but have had the pleasure to know two different guys who where corpsman. One from Vietnam and one from Korea. The Korean guy was a Navy corpsman attached to the Marines. He earned three purple hearts in Korea.

Unless things have changed, all Marine corpsmen are sailors attached to the Marines. That is one tough and special job.

Enjoy that lunch and make plans for many more.

Funny story about that. His brother told him if he wanted to avoid combat he should join the Navy. So he did and signed up as a Corpsman. His brother about fell over when he found out. He probably ended up seeing more action then if had joined the Army.

Guy,

Glad to hear you found him!! If you don't mind, I would like to know his name. I used to be stationed in LA when I was in the USAF and had a part time job. Well, the guy I worked for at Huges Aircraft was a combat medic in Vietnam and I am wondering if it is the same guy.

His name

Postby Guy » Wed Mar 07, 2007 1:49 pm

Dear Kerry,

At first I wrote his name and then went back quickly and edited it. I just figured he should have the right to put out his name and experiences and I had not told him yet about teardrops4vets and you guys. He is meeting me at the VA Golf Course in West LA tomorrow. The teardrop is just a mere 100 feet away and I will be sure to get a pic of both of us and ask his permission to post his name.

What I do know is that he has been in the medical field for 30 years. And at UC Santa Cruz for university. That is how I found him. I finallly put his name and the term "medical" in google and it isolated all the people with his name.
Regards,

Guy

It is now a very pleasurable memory

Postby Guy » Wed Mar 07, 2007 1:57 pm

Dear Dave,

It has already turned into a pleasurable memory. It was the not knowing his fate that was the burden, especially as a Marine Sgt.. You always keep in your mind that watching out for your doc is a prime responsibility. So now it is complete.

I was telling one of my friends here at the VA today about this and he was a helicopter resue guy. He flew out on chopper to rescue downed pilots. His last rescue was a pilot whose leg had been severed. He rescued the pilot and the leg and it took him thirty years to find the pilot living in Oregon with the leg attached and still able to move about. So we both laughed (knowing we were really crying) and I jumped on his puter to write these posts.

Love ya guys.
Regards,

Guy

In light of that information, I'm sure that he is not the guy that I worked for. But, please do post a pic with or without his name. I always like to see heros!!!
