Antivirus Software...

Postby Dean in Eureka, CA » Fri Mar 16, 2007 11:01 pm

I had eTrust EZ, but it just stopped working about two weeks ago... Kept telling me I needed to update, but when I would try, it would say that I wasn't connected to the interent. I even emailed them, but got no response, so I dumped it.
Did a Google on Free Antivirus Software and found Avast Home Edition... Seems to have rave reviews, just wondering if anyone here uses it and if so, what they think about it.
Any recommendations for other Free Antivirus Software???

Dean... I have used it in the past and I liked it. I think it is prolly the best of the free ones. I am still using Norton/Symantic's AntiVirus 2003 since they let me renew it every year for $24.95. I will prolly use Avast on my new lappy though.

Dean:

I don't use Norton anti virus cause it is an resource hoggatha~

That said right now I use Grisoft's AVG software = free.

Here is a link from the past that might give more advice and compare Avast.

Brick,
I had Norton and it worked great, till I went to renew it... My computer crashed both times.
After the second year, I had to get a new hardrive and went with the free eTrust. Don't know if it was all because of Norton... I was also running Automatic Windows Update with the Big M and that may have been part of it or all of it.
Jack showed me how to nix that AWU and I haven't done a Windows Update since and boy howdy do those friggin' pop ups remind me about that... Sure wish I knew how to get them to stop. :?

Edit: Thanks Steve... Didn't see your post until after I posted.

Dean, I have been using AVAST for about a year and a half...was using AVG previous to that...the first time I ran AVAST it found several bugs hidden deep in the system files...it takes a little longer to run a full system scan with AVAST becuse it digs a little deeper...if you install AVAST, it will update automatically with no hassles to you ...also when first installed, run it back to back at lest three time to get a VERY thorough deep cleaning...

Dean... I get this Windows Secrets newsletter... I have learned a lot from this guy over time. I think he answered your question in the last issue on how to uninstall the "Windows Genuine Advantage" bit of Microsoft nonsense:

Welp... About three hours total time.
Download, Initial Boot Scan and Update...
My hard copper wire dialup prolly started to smoke.
Steve... I was already in the process of downloading Avast when you made those other recommendations...
At least downloads usually complete on this dialup, unlike most videos...
Cool!
I'm now under the protection of Avast!
Jack... Will do those back to backs tomorrow, I'm hittin' da hay. :SH

Dean,

Got to Control Panel - Security Center - then on the right side is a section called Resources - Down towards the bottom, is "Change the Way Security Center alerts me" Uncheck what is needed.

Linux O/S = no anti-virus and adware required.

That said, I have one Windows box left and I use Avast with it. Works well and is not intrusive.

Dean,

I have used Avast for a couple of years now with no problems at all. I think you will be pleased. The only thing you will have to do is re-register it every 6 mos or a year....I forget how often. Worth the trouble for free software that works great, though.

It said every 14 months... But six months sounds close to me.
Yaa... "I ran into so-n-so the other day..." In reality it was more like 18 months ago.
