Hello all,

I have been thinking about buying an old caravan (that's what we call trailers in Oz) and refurbishing it. I stumbled onto some information about teardrops and immediately was hooked! I just love the "small is beautiful" idea behind these beautiful little things.

The trouble is my height - 6'2" in the old units. How big can you make these little things?

Welcome Mike, I do hope you enjoy our little play pen. The neatest thing about building is you make what suits you. Being tall is not a factor unless you decide you like being squashed. ;)

Some of your fellow countrymen are members here and at least one is 6'4". He manages. I am sure he will be along sometime to introduce himself so don't tell Paul I told you he was a MadAussie and needed lots of pictures to be happy. 8) Oh and we have a Madjack too. Guess what he loves? ;)

Just joking with ya. Lots of pictures and build information in the Hall of Fame. Good place to start.

Aunti M is just low on bubble oil at the moment.

Howdy!!!

Yes, Welcome to the forum!!! :applause:

This is a great place and the folks here are awesome! Glad you found us!!

Question, I have heard of Australia being refered to a Oz, why? Just Courious.

Anywho, make sure to check the upper right of the page for the Generic Benroy Plans. They are a great place to start, and remember, you can always modify your build for your needs. I'm short, 5'3", ( I like to call them classics units) so 5x8 worked for me. But an extra 12" in the galley would have been nice. Ya might think about a 5x10.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Mike...I'm also 6'2" and had a 1949 Kit...and no matter how I slept in it...it was just too short....I've built 3 10' long tears now and I can get plenty of length in them, 6'7" sleeping area...but I've also gone wider than 4'....some people jump to 5' but I went 4'6".....works great and tucks in behind the tow vehicle really well. Welcome aboard...have some fun...Doug :applause:

...hiya Mike, and welcome aboard our little rumpus room...others have covered our need for pics...let me say that I am 6'2 and find a 5'x8' to be just fine...of course I streched the sleeping compartment to 6'6 and stole the extra room outta the galley, making it smaller...like was stated above...your building it so make it the way you want......
madjack 8)

p.s. you will have to do your own conversion on measurments from Merikan to Ozican :D ;)

Thanks for the welcomes - it certainly seems that teardroppers (is that what you call yourselves?) are a friendly bunch.

Mary K, Australians tend to shorten words of more than a few letters, and spelling suffers as well. So Australia becomes Aus, which becomes Oz (we pronounce them pretty much the same).

Confused? I guess we have it easier, we grow up on a diet of American movies and TV.

G'Day Mike, I'm just down the road from you( that should confuse 'em  )
I'm 6'4" and in the final stages of build Number2. This is an 8'x5' Benroy as per the generic plans, sort of. No probs with the sleeping area, just make it longer and lose a bit from the kitchen area.
If you get in touch with Reiner from Aussie Teardrop Campers, up in Browns Plains around the Logan area, he will help you with all you need to know.

Cheers
Paul

Mary, the one that will certainly catch you out is the name of the language spoken by Aussies (the land may be Oz, but the people are never Ozzies), which is 'Strine'.

If you say 'Australian' to yourself a hundred times, putting stress on only the second 'a' and virtually dropping the other syllables, you'll find it comes out just like that!
