Almost Finished my Icebox

Too Bad..I'm gonna show you anyway!!!!






Started by making the foam box....



Then made the interior with1/8 plexy...


Made a center panel to hold a couple of fans... They blow in opposite ways to circulate the air...




Made the front frame...


Added brackets for the ice bucket...



Cut al. molding for front and installed in galley...... not quite finished yet...

Now comes the hard part..... THE DOORS!!!!

Oh yea.... I also put an indoor/outdoor thermometer in it...The main part will be in the galley so that I can see what the temp is.

That's really COOL!!! get it? Good job John...Is your plan to fill the stainless pan with water and freeze it prior to going?...it would maximize your cooling capacity...but too full and you're going to have to deal with water sloshing around.Doug

Great work, I am curious how it works for you. I want to go the ice box route myself, I think it will save a bunch of weight compared to a refrigerator and avoids the power/ventilation issues. Kind of nice that you can make it whatever size you want also. My only concern is that everything I have read about ice box's is that the ideal door is on the top (cold sinks) so when you open the front door the cold doesn't poor out. Of course my doors will most likely be on the front also as a top loader doesn't fit so well in a tear.

Thanks for the Kudo's... Today was the first day back working on the tear for over a month. It was so bitter cold that even the heater in the shop couldn't keep up.. That and the fact the tear is actually outside didn't help.
Today was nice and sunny and fairly warm. It was great to get back at it.

Now all I have to do is finish the galley...cabin.....hatch.... sides....etc...etc...

The old iceboxes had the ice on top and cooler underneath. I figured with them side by side, and separate compartments, It won't lose as much cold every time you went in. With the fans circulating the air, it would cool it down faster after you shut the door. Still thinking of putting a switch on the door, so that the fans shut off when you open the door. I'm dyiong to try it out, but have to wait until the doors are installed....

Yeah, I guess that makes sense with the two doors, at least you only lose half the cold. If it is anything like home though I will have to retrain myself from standing there for a few minutes with the door open waiting for something good to appear.

Looking great John, good idea with the fans. When I do build mine I too want a built in cooler, only may go with a top loader. Keep up the good work.

I'm going to put a drain in the bottom of the pan to drain into a container to catch the water... That way I'll have nice cold water for my alcoholic beverages, er I mean .... my orange juice.....
