Some travel trailers issued to victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita last year by the Federal Emergency Management Agency are emitting potentially dangerous levels of formaldehyde, an industrial chemical used in their manufacture which some residents say is making them sick.

“Hundreds of empty trailers”… No, thousands.
Take a lookmat a trailer dump on I-59 some 10 miles south of Hattisburg, MS.

So if you are looking for a trailer frame of parts don't look here.

be whare what you put in yours too.

;) Gotta ask yourself why Sierria Club is doing tests that already exist and have for many years. Who paid for the testing?

Gee isn't that tested when they roll off the factory floor? Wonder if California requires testing before selling. :R

Gotta wonder too, what has the Sierra club done to assist the displaced Katrina victims in the efforts to help them find housing.

If you read the sierra club document, there is no testing or standard for RV's, however there is for "manufactured housing".

Sierra club likely paid for it's own testing, as they are a private organization. There is a picture of a little device which I assume is not that costly.

If California has requirments, it would likley only apply to units manufactured in the state.

what's wrong with an organization pointing this out? I appreciate that they didn't just look at FEMA trailers and point fingers at the federal gov and wondered if this was an industry wide problem. Most RV's have a high concentration of materials that can off gas in a pretty confined space that stays locked up and airtight.

Not a thing wrong with an organization testing. Just wondered who paid for it and why Sierra Club instead of a human health organization did the testing. Sounds like the health issues spurred the testing.

It is truly amazing to me the its the "governments" fault - when the "government" is trying to do something right. Aren't there far more people buying travel trailers on their own than the "government" ever will? If there is a problem with these trailers and they are unsafe, then we need to deal with it - but don't blame someone who may or probably didn't know these trailers - as all trailers apparently do - have a problem.

I get sooooo tired of everyone looking to the "government" - ummm that would be you and me - for all this stuff - guess I always thought governments were responsible for defense and infrastructure - but silly me.............. :)

the sierra club article states that they tested less than 100 trailers. They list a link to the test kits and they are $34 each. This is not expensive testing

We had some posts a while ago about formedehyde glues and that they can't be used in Europe for just this reason.

Who cares if is the sierra club or some other organization that points out a problem?

I beleive there are a lot of reasons why there are a bunch of trailers that didn't get used. Bureaucracy is a good all encompassing way to describe it. It's a shame our tax dollars are wasted in this way.

Of course, all these usused FEMA trailers will get used... eventually. After the gubment auctions them off for ten cents on the dollar, they will be spiffed up and sold to unsuspecting Americans. And who will get to bid on the auctions? Why vendors with good connections to the good-old-boy network in Washington, who else. Ain't America grand! :o

Got one better than that in New Orleans area. A buddy of mine has a hauling business. He won the contract to remove some really toxic crap from a site. The stuff was so nasty that not only the stuff had to be dumped but after only 3 loads in a truck, the truck itsself had to be dumped too. Which he knew before bidding.

Obviously he didn't use or plan to use his best trucks. The EPA shut him down because his trucks, the ones that only had to be driven about 40 miles then dumped themselves did not pass emissions.

Perminant Toxic waist VS. An hours worth of Diesel Fumes

Yucky Trails

Actually a lot of them are being sold online by the GSA at:

Well, I'm impressed. I figured they would go in big lots to a few bidders? Of course they have a bunch more of them and some may go that way?
It's amazing to see $35,000. trailers less than 2 year old trailers going for 2 to 5 thousand dollars. Our tax dollars are being re-distributed well huh?

Interesting site though.

Yeah, but look at the pictures of them, most are pretty beat up, and some are totally trashed.

They do have some interesting things there from time to time, everything from ships to office machines.
