Whole House Fans (Attic Fans)

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Whole House Fans (Attic Fans)

Postby Geron » Mon Apr 02, 2007 5:15 am

When I was a young boy growing up in the red dirt hills of West Georgia...

OK, OK I'll get to the point.

When I was a boy my Dad always installed a whole house fan whenever we moved. You know, the kind that mounts in the ceiling or some that window mount.

I remember having to pull up a blanket in the middle of summer with the windows cracked and the fan running. I have since followed that same practice -- mounting a whole house fan.

There are some drawbacks.
1. don't forget to turn the fan off when you cut the grass!!! DUST in the house.

2. POLLEN. During the pollen season they are virtually useless

However,

Here is a solution I came up with after 61 years of suffering. DOH!!

DA FAN

DA Solution:

Found these 12 x 30 5 micron filters that just fit in our windows. Even if you could not find the right size, in 15 minutes you could build a frame and cut a filter to fit.

Works great for us. Wife even thinks they are "somewhat" attractive

Geron -

Smart! I'll never forget listening to the "thrum" of that whole house fan as a boy, lulling me to sleep, and keeping me cool! Thanks for the tip and the memory. :fan:

Very Nice Geron,

When I was a little kid my grandpa had a cabin in NE Oklahoma on the Grand River, he put a 6 foot industrial exhaust fan in one end of the sleeping porch, if you were sleeping at the other end of the porch by the window you would have to tuck the sheet under the mattress to keep it from being blown off the bed. 8)

My whole house fan will suck gnats in through the screen and man is that thing noisy...sounds like a sherman tank running in the house.
I only use it sparingly.

We don't got no stinking gnats up/over here.

My Dad told stories of working on the rail road in south GA. Somewhere around 1935-40. When they stopped to eat gnats would form a ring around their plates. Got to where they didn't even pick'em out. Just ate them :o

Wouldn't take a 5 micron filter to filter out the gnats. The noise might be something else.
