Hello - Newbie from ALABAMA

Postby BrianW » Tue Mar 27, 2007 4:55 pm

Hello all - Newbie here from ALABAMA,
Wow there is a lot of good information through out this site. I have been gathering information and looking at lots pics of Teardrops for about a year and I am about ready to start building my own Teardrop.

I have a boat trailer that i am going to use and will make neccesary modification. One question that comes to mind first is i didn't see much info or pics about attaching the wooden framing/flooring to the trailer frame. Any suggestions?

Brian,

Welcome to the board. What kind of a framing/flooring are you going to use? 2x? and plywood, or just plywood or 1x? and plywood? Most are bolted with polyurethene or silicone caulk between the wood and the frame.

Hey Brian, welcome to the sandbox/playground. We have lots of ways to attach the floor. A lot depends on the kind of floor you make. Mine is bolted to the frame with 3/8 bolts, washers from underneath into T nuts. 4 on each side, front and back.

Hey Brian,

Welcome,

What part of AL? I'm about 9 miles inside GA. We might be neighbors.

Don't let the ugly pic scare you

Yeah, I tried "red eye" removal but it didn't work. We'll work on another pic -- some day. Gotta work on the TD. On the down hill roll now.

Brian,

Are you allowing for any insulation in the floor. If you are, I don't see it.

Brian,

That looks good to me, but I think that you could use 1/2" plywood for the floor and cut a rabbit in your 1x2 framing to set it into. Unless you have very little or no support underneath, 3/4" is more than you need. And if you are modifying the trailer anyway, just put some crossmembers in (they don't have to be metal, they can be wood).

My plan is to build the framing as pictured above with cross bracing and screw 1/2" plywood to framing and then bolt with 3/8" bolts to trailer frame. I am also going to put in a storage box in the floor and then cover the floor with lanoleum.
I am going to undercoat the bottom and glue insulation on. Should i use screws and fender washers to secure the insulation from coming down and use more undercoating to cover the insulation?

Can you imagine exposed styrofoam on a gravel road. I sandwiched the foam board between my floor and a layer of exterior plywood. I wish I had covered mine with sheet steel , aluminum or plactic sheets but the undercoat seems to be holding up well.

Welcome. I'm in Alabaster too. The folks here are great. I read the construction pages for so long it took me awhile to figure out the rest of the pages are fantastic as well.

Check your mail.

Welcome again
