IMHO If you are skinning the trailer with Aluminum, the second layer of plywood is just added weight. 1/8” with .040 Aluminum over it is still a bit overkill. Some have done it without even using a 1/8” plywood skin.

Right Dan...my last one...1/8" ply with .040 alum. over it...but I did use a troweled adhesieve on it for the aluminum...worked fine...Doug

I dont think my skin will be over weight due to the fact Im using 1.5mm Marine Ply x 2 .. plus the aluminum or stainless.. I dont have to fight the tight radius on my tear at all this way...Previous hatch I used 4 mm and
... almost done ...I heard a sharp crrrrrraaaaaaack ... and ..rest is history.

different ... Id say so but it works... so no over kill

Hello Again!

I now have all the materials wood, straps and I bought some PL Polyurethane premium Construction Adhesive like Jim recommended.

My next question is about the PL Adhesive. I assume I run beads horizontally and one bead around the edges (side wall edges). How far apart should the beads be on the horizontal runs?

Please don't tell me I need to cover every inch, cause I'd have to wait for payday for that.

When's pay day? I can't tell you how much glue it will take but I would squeeze it on and trowel it out with a notched trowel or get one of the toppers they make for tube glue. It puts out 4 or 5 beads at once. The stuff swells to fill some gaps so you don't want to cover every inch.

MK, I would make sure all the edges got good coverage and then just ziggity zag some lines on the rest...pull the ply down into the adhesive...lift the ply back up and then push it back into position and strap in place...beware the "squish out" and clean immediately as it will be hard as the dickens to clean up latter...

MK, I did like MJ said and also did a little rotating and sliding to get it good and messy, I didn't clean up the squished out stuff, i waited till it dried and routered it off., but then, i'm lazy that way.

I have install 2 sheets of the exterior and all went well!!!

Oh, I forgot to mention, I did learn on the second sheet, to wrap the tube of adhesive in a heating pad for about 30 min before use. On the first sheet it was a b!%@h to get out with the caulk gun, but after warming it up, it was like butta!!

We attemped to skin the hatch today and on our dry run (without glue), we found it isn't going to be as easy.

We need more sandbags. And forget the straps.
